Hi, I'm new to the forum. My 08 xf  is possibly over heating. the coolant is extremely hot after just 8 miles town driving. I opened the bonnet to find the port side of the bay chard and smelling of burning. There is no loss of any fluid levels. The chard bits could well be soot from the DPF as it was not an oily smell or residue. I make mostly short town journeys so the over heating and chard bits may well be the DPF. My car has done 118000. Just wanted some advice as have only had her 9 months and not quite sure. Many thanks

Welcome to the Club, Karl.

Short journeys is the key.  It could be either the EGR valves or the DPF, but I am surprised that there was not an engine malfunction warning light on.

I would be inclined to look for a good independent garage to check it over, as you don't want a fire under the bonnet.  A main dealer will want you to give them a lot of money to fix it.

Trevor [from Devon] might be able to point out a good indy.

Regards,

Peter.

Thanks Peter, there has been no warning lights what so ever. i am in the forces and have just taken it to the car club. they have had an over look and there appears to be no obvious problem, alhough they are not JAG specialists. i will hand clean the engine bay to clear any soot, take her for a nice run and then monitor closely. will make sure that the car gets a run at least once a week now. also, i don't think it has anything to do with it. the air conditioning was not cold when selected to low so i have just charged it up via workshop at work. nice and cold now. Thanks for repling

Hi Karl,

I think your car will have the same engine as my S Type -- 2.7D.

There is a process that will clean up the engine called Terraclean and it has a lot of good reviews.  It is worth looking at.

My car which has quite a low mileage is going in on Friday to be done at a cost of £114.

Just google Terraclean and you will see some reports.

Regards,

Peter.

Yes Peter, it is the same engine,

I have had a look and terraclean looks a great idea. i will give it a try.

Took her for a run yesterday to clean DPF. seems to have worked.

I will be watching a lot more closely now

Thankyou for your advice.

Many thanks

Karl
