  1. Hello, A couple of times, over the last few weeks, I started my car and tried to turn the selector to drive, but it wouldn't turn. I tried 'jiggling' it, and nothing worked until I'd stopped and started the engine a few times when It finally freed and turned properly. Is there a simple fix for this or am I looking at buying a new unit *Shudder* ?
  2. Thank you one and all, yes the answer was in the touchscreen, and all is now as it was. My excuse is that I'm not use to clever cars, the onboard computer on my last car was an abacus. Regards LB
  3. HI. The doors lock normally with a click, according to my manual, double clicking stops them from being opened from the inside. I don't know if that's true because I've never tried open it from the inside. My trouble is unlocking the doors, one click does not unlock any door, it takes two. And this has only happened recently.
  4. Hi. I don't know if this helps, but I had this window problem a couple of years ago in a different car, but it was simply a build-up of gung in the window channels. A quick clean out with a screwdriver wrapped with a piece of cloth and the a quick blast with WD40 and all was well. The gearbox people I use recommend an oil change at 60,000 miles. Regards LB
  5. Hello, Recently I've had to unlock my car by clicking twice. After the first 'click' the lights flash and there is a quirt clunk but the doors are still locked, it's only after a second 'click' when the lights flash again and there's a louder 'thunk' that the doors open. this has only been happening in the past couple of weeks. Has Anyone any ideas? Or have I done something silly by accident to make it like this? Regards LB
  6. Hi, I had this problem with my drivers door seal. After a lot of searching I found a used replacement from Belgium on Ebay. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and fitted perfectly in a few minutes.
  7. Hi Brian and welcome. I've have a high mileage 2011 XF (pre upgrade). Apart from getting the gearbox oil changed as soon as I bought it (there was no mention of it in the service history), I've had no real problems with it, it's passed the MOT every time with no problems, a service at the time is the only time it's been in a garage. I had a problem with the fuel gauge, which, told in another post, took me a Youtube video and about 45 minutes to fix, a fob battery warning which turned out to be the battery on th spare fob, and a thermostat leak which luckily happened during a service so was repaired at cost. Going by my car only, I can only whole heartily recommend it. I hope this helps. Regards Phil
  8. Hi. I had this problem, but a quick look on Youtube found a video about a connector in the fuel tank. Under the back seat is the cover for the tank, I undid this and underneath, just hanging there, was a connector, I cleaned this , gave it a quick spray with contact cleaner, re attached in reverse order, and job done, back in for a cuppa in about 45 minutes. That was about two years ago and have not had a problem since (touch wood!!).
  9. Well, it seems like you were right. I changed the battery in my wifes key fob and I've not had a warning sice. Thanks for the advice.
  10. I had mine changed at Gloucester Road Gearboxes, Bristol. They recommend that gearbox oil should be changed every 60,000 miles.
  11. Thanks for that. I'm using Duracell batteries, but the second fob is a good idea, my wife usually carries it in her hand bag. Thanks for that.
  12. Hi, Recently the 'low battery' warning for my key fob has displayed intermittently. I've changed the battery three times in the last two months, but it still appears. This message doesn't appear every time, and if it does I switch the car off and on again and it's usually gone. Any ideas would be appreciated. Regards LB
  13. Close, other side of the river, Pill.
  14. Hi Fellow Bristolian. Sorry, I was 1 out, it's M5 not M4. I can see the avonmouth bridge from my rear garden.
  15. I live in a village between Bristol and Portishead, two minutes from junction 19 on the M4, if that helps. They also do a courtesy car by arrangement. I know it's a horrible feeling when you lose a trusted workman, I hope you find a new one soon.
  16. Hi John. No, they're a local garage. But they've never been phased by any of the cars I've owned. (Jaguar,Honda, Range rover, Hyundai, Vauxhall).
  17. Yes, I've used them for ages and they always seem to do a very good job at a reasonable price.
  18. They replaced the unit at cost price with no labour charge.
  19. I'm not sure, all I know is that, in some stage of the test, he was revving the engine and off it went. he showed me the plastic casing of the thermostat which was in pieces.
  20. Hi, On Thursday I took my car in for it's annual service/MOT. When I went to collect it, it was with some glee, that the mechanic took me to the place where, while running some tests, the thermometer, in his words, exploded. The area was quite flooded. Two days before I had driven home from North Wales a four hour drive, so I was lucky it didn't happen then. Is this a common problem as I've never heard of it happening before? BTW the car passed the MOT.
  21. Thanks for the replies. I've no idea what size tyres were fitted originally, so either I have to get my speedo recalibrated or, possibly the route I'll take, fit the larger tyres. I'll check my tyre sizes tonight.
  22. Possibly a silly question, but, at around 70 mph my phone satnav reports my speed about 62mph. Which to believe? I'm trending towards the satnav (not just because I can go faster 🙂 )
  23. Hi, I'm very wary of non- specialists on aircon. I took my car for a aircon cleanse and top up, left it for three hours, when I returned the 'mechanic' said it needed a new compressor etc., when I told him there was nothing wrong with it before he touched it, he told me to bring it back in a couple of days. Surprise, surprise, when I returned it a different bloke took it and a short while later I had a aircon disinfected and blowing ice-cold air. I still believe the first bloke didn't know the top-up valve was behind the front wheel.
