  1. I've only had my 3.0 S diesel for a week now and only use it to drive 20 miles each way to work. I am slightly disappointed with the 35 mpg for a decent run, not heavy footed (well, not very often!!). I was thinking about a combination of having the engine chipped and switching to a decent fuel (V Power). I did some numbers, and assuming the decent fuel is 10p/litre more than the supermarket sludge, I reckon if I get an extra 5 miles per gallon it will save me over £100 per year (not much, but it all goes to offset the next service cost!). So, can anybody confirm the extra mpg when using V Power over supermarket type fuel, and would this increase further with getting the engine chipped? I had my last car Terracleaned, and it gave me 10mpg more overnight, but this settled down to about 5 mpg after a few weeks - amazing. Still loving the XF, and to quote a previous post, it's more about the smiles per gallon rather than the miles per gallon . Cheers, Mac
  2. Thanks Old_Growler, appreciate the help. I was hoping that was the answer, because I bet a replacement set of bulbs wouldn't have come cheap. Cheers again, Mac
  3. I have uploaded photos of the lights to illustrate my question (pun intended ) - hopefully this will help you to help me!! I haven't checked closely, but are the 7 LEDs around the inner light purely for the indicator, or is this the sidelight that isn't working? I'll check tonight when I get home but thought somebody might be able to help. Cheers, Mac Image 1: Day-running - LEDs quite bright Image 2: Dipped beam - LEDs dimmed, dipped beam bulb ON Image 3: Sidelights - LEDs dimmed, no other bulbs illuminated (the image in the main bulb is just a reflection of the flash!). Image 4: Main beam - LEDs dimmed, main beam bulb ON
  4. Can I ask if anybody can explain if the sidelights on my 2011 facelift XF have failed. When my lights are OFF the LEDs are on constantly (good). When I select my sidelights only, the LEDs dim but no other light illuminates. When I select main headlights, they work as intended. I will post a few pictures in a while but was wondering if there are sidelights or if both bulbs have gone (could it be a fuse?). Cheers, Mac
  5. Thanks Trevor. Two things drop out of that for me: 1. Does that mean it is a standard fit 2. Why would you want to turn it off (ie does it increase the driving experience)? Thanks for the reply. Mac
  6. Hi. For fear of sounding stupid, can anybody explain what the adaptive dynamics are? Is it standard on all XF models (some adverts mention it as if it's an optional extra) and is it those few options found near the gear selector? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm just a little curious!! Cheers, Mac
  7. Hi ladies and gents. I'm sure this must have been covered many times before, but I have used the search function to no avail. Can anybody advise on whether or not I will need to factor in changing the timing chain for my XF 3.0 S engine. I have received conflicting information which suggests that I need to change it at 110 000 miles, and other information which said they don't need changing. I'd really appreciate any advice. The car only has 57 000 miles, but I'm just trying to plan long term costs so I know it won't need doing for a few years yet (hopefully). Thanks for any help, Mac
  8. Hi. Does anybody know of any independent Jaguar specialists close to Lincoln/Newark? I'm hoping to buy an XF 3.0 S in the near future but it'll probably have about 85 000 miles, so want to price up a timing chain replacement to factor into the cost. Thanks, Mac
  9. Thanks for your help guys. I'm focussing in on hopefully a 3.0 V6 S Portfolio, and looking at around 50k - 60k miles. There are a few out there, but more with up to 90k miles. Has anybody got a similar mileage car and are they still "tight as a drum", or will things start to shake, rattle and roll by the time they get to that mileage? Once again, thanks for any info, it will help shape my final decision. Mac.
  10. Hi. I currently drive a 2.2 D X-Type and love it, but am thinking of upgrading to a 3.0 Diesel. I will be looking for one about 2010 with circa 60 000 miles. One of the things I am considering is the cost of maintenance, and am hoping somebody could advise on things like cambelt change (if there is one, my X-Type has a chain) and what mileage/cost I need to consider, servicing schedules and costs etc and anything else I have forgotten. Thanks in advance for any help, Mac
  11. Hi. Recently the plunger that locks the fuel filler cap on my car has failed to protrude when the manual release lever by the seat is let go. This means that my fuel flap is always unlocked. I have tried to push the release lever back down, but there seems to be a bit of resistance and the plunger remains firmly in its housing (a bit like a tortoise's head in it's shell!!). Does anybody know if there's a manual lock inside the boot (a 2007 saloon) or how I can remove the current cable to replace it. Thanks for any help. Mac
  12. Phil, Can you mention that I'd also be interested in getting the job done, obviously dependant on the cost!! How do we contact him, or will you pass on our details? Cheers, Mac
  13. Hi Phil. Do you have a link to the lights you bought? Checking out the options on Amazon, there are so many companies and options available that a recommendation from a satisfied customer will help the final decision. When it comes to making my purchase, what should I be looking for (I am assuming H1, 55W, 5000K), and what is the expected life? Thanks for your help, Mac
  14. Hi. Has anybody ever fitted HiD lights to their X-Type? I have noticed the dipped beam is pretty awful, but high beam is okay, so I am thinking of upgrading just the dipped lights. If anybody has trodden this particular path, do you have any recommendations of type/model, where to buy from, how much and how easy was the embodiment? All advice gratefully appreciated. Cheers, Mac
  15. Has anybody else heard the rumour that I heard today that the new MoT will be an automatic fail for retro fit HIDs? The guy in the accessory shop suggested that I just opt for the replacement bulbs - does anybody have experience of them and are they any good, or is it worth the extra expense and go for HIDs? Thanks for your help so far, Mac
  16. I am a bit worried about the heater controls on my 2008 X-Type 2.2 diesel SE. If I set the temperature to a comfortable level but then adjust it (up or down) on the display, the actual physical temperature seems to go either very cold or very hot. I don't use the Auto function and rarely use air-con, so can anybody advise on what might be the problem? Should I be letting the Auto function do its job, or might there be something more sinister going wrong? TIA, Mac
  17. I had a stone thrown up from the car in front and it went straight through my fog light lens - great!!! I'm looking at buying a used unit from a "well known online auction site", but can anybody tell me if they are handed or interchangeable, and are they easy to change over? Finally (honest) does anybody have any thoughts on those with the 100W bulbs - are they even legal? Thanks again, Mac
  18. I think I have read on here that the dipped beam headlights on an X-Types are notorious for being poor, and mine fit the bill perfectly. On unlit country roads, they are as useless and I end up just aiming to the left of any oncoming car and hope for the best! Does anybody here have any suggestions to replacement bulbs that I can do myself or would you recommend the HID units, and how easy are these to replace? If you recommend the HID units, do you have any ideas on where I might get some, and how much I might expect to pay? Thanks for any help, Mac
  19. Hi guys - sorry to piggy back into an ongoing thread, but I've just bought a 2012 disc for my x-type and was wondering if there was any advice on doing the swap - do I need to have the sat nav on or off, does the engine need to be running and is it just a case of ejecting existing disc and inserting new disc, or is there a trick/knack I should be aware of? Thanks for any help, Mac
  20. Having bought a 2008 X-Type 2.2 Diesel that I thought was a Sovereign spec, I have learned today that it might in fact be a SE spec wrongly identified as a Sovereign (even the V5 states Sovereign but it doesn't have the wooden insert steering wheel, piped seats, multi-CD player and a few other Sovereign toys not immediately apparent during a test drive unless you REALLY know the spec trim levels!). Can anybody shed any further light on the saga of Jaguar wrongly identifying model specs in the mid 00's, and would I have any redress against the trader (as a trader, should he have known or is it a case of buyer beware)? Thanks for any advice, as despite the fact that the car is still superb, it takes the edge off purchasing what is, for me, a dream car! Cheers in advance, Mac
  21. Hi Phil. Thanks for your message. I took a few (poor quality) pictures behind the boot liner this evening and noticed a loom with a yellow label with the letters CD DJ written on it; would this be the loom for a CD changer, and if so would it simply plug into a unit? I didn't notice this until I downloaded the pictures so didn't get a picture of the connector, but will try to get a better picture tomorrow. You mentioned a fibre optic cable - is that contained within this loom or is it a separate cable altogether? I also noticed a cable with what looks like a 3-way connector stowed away - is this anything important? As mentioned in a previous comment, there is a CDC button amongst all the other buttons on the touch-screen console so I'm hoping this should go relatively easy!! Cheers again Mac
  22. For more background info, my dash has a CD button and a CDC button - I am assuming this means CD and CD Changer?
  23. Hi Bezza. Gutted - I was in Sheffield yesterday (Meadow Hell!!). My car has the sat nav and telephone as factory fits, and I have had a quick peek behind the trim and see that I have a double stack tower, with sat nav in the upper tier and a space below that I am assuming will accommodate the cd changer. I will have a closer look later to see if I can find any wires, but would you know if I need a specific cd changer or would a generic jaguar one suffice? Can you PM me with a rough price to do the work? Cheers, Mac.
  24. Thanks Peter. Is there anyway of identifying the exact particular part number of the multi-changer I would need? I have checked on that well-known auction site (other auctions sites are available!!) and there seems to be a multitude of multi-changers available! For example, would an XK8 multi-changer fit straight in, or would I need to know the loom code first (assuming one is fitted)? Cheers, Mac
  25. Can anybody advise on how easy it would be to retrofit a multi-player CD holder in the boot of my Sovereign? Will I need a loom or are they pre-fitted? Also, can I cut out the boot liner myself or will I need to buy a pre-cut liner? Once again, all advice greatly appreciated; thanks in advance.
