  1. Hi Mac Changing the light fitting over is fairly straightforward providing you can get the cover that attaches to the bottom of the bumper off or at least remove enough of the bolts to gain access to the back of the foglight. Unfortunately they tend to get rusted up because of the location so it's worth giving them a few doses of Plusgas prior to removal which will hopefully make removal easier. The light fitting is held in with four small bolts and there is a plug connector which is straightforward to remove. One word of caution when buying a replacement unit- the early X types had a different plug connector to the later models such as yours. If I remember correctly JLR changed the connector around MY2004 so you need to be looking for examples from models 2004 onwards. Not sure about fitting 100w bulbs whether it might blow the fuse fitted. I know a few people have fitted HID H11 set ups which are a lot brighter than the standard set ups. I've fitted LED units to mine and these double up as daytime running lights, they're not the brightest as fog lamps but in all honesty I can't remember the last time that I used front fogs, so preferred the more useful DRL's. Hope this helps.
  2. Hi On my previous car, a 2002 3.0 litre sport auto I would always be getting this code sporadically. I would do a code reset and it would be fine again for several hundred miles. During the time of my ownership it went through 3 MOT's and sailed through the emissions test every time. I would regularly (every 3-4 months) add Cataclean to the tank which maybe helped possibly, but the code would still come back. I spoke to my local Jaguar independent who said that in all probability the forward catalyst was to blame and after 125k miles would need replacing at some stage. It's a job that I never got round to as the gearbox failed and I decided to break the car. However the catalytic converters live on in a friends car- when removed both catalysts were found to be in fine condition and infinitely better than those on my mate's car, so they were reused. I don't think that if you're only getting that code I would panic too much, if it starts other related codes then maybe it's time to investigate further. Hope this helps.

Bought in Dec 2014 to replace my beloved 3.0 auto saloon which sadly had to go after the gearbox failed. The first few pictures show it 'as it was' when I bought it. Bit of an ongoing project with a few mods done, as shown in the subsequent photos and more planned for the next few months.

In the cabin, replacement gear knob off ebay, together with real leather gaiters for handbrake, gear stick and centre console armrest recovered in leather- so much better than the crappy vinyl faux leather fitted by the factory. Radio sat nav surround, gear surround and soon to be top bezel plate painted piano black to match the rest of the dash and Pure DAB radio with ipod attachment added. Next things to do are upgrade passenger seat to all electric adjustment like the driver's and retro-fit bluetooth. Also add power outlet to the boot area- I've already done one for the glovebox. Source an amp and sub-woofer and retro-fit premium sound- I've already transferred the Alpine speakers and tweeters from my previous car, so half way there.

Transferred my 17" Bermudas from my previous car, which are pretty much immaculate, while I decide whether to have the original Arubas refurbished and fitted or just sell them. Waiting for it to get warmer and all new discs and pads all round together with a nice coat of black paint on the calipers.

This and next 5 photos were taken on the day I bought the car. Fairly tidy but in need of a major clean inside due to the previous but one owner having had a dog and the boot area was just covered in years of dog hair accumulation YUK! 18" Arubas fitted which are tatty and in need of a refurb, albeit the tyres are good. Odd mark here and there and the dog owner had never bothered to fit a bumper guard so doggy scratches to the top of the rear bumper- one for the to do list along with the front bumper which has the odd mark here and there, together with the obligatory supermarket trolley dink in the front passenger door.. Other than that 88k with full Jaguar service history and all receipts. Has had LPG fitted but has been removed, I may possibly refit that. Drives very well and pretty much all the toys but I will be adding to that along the line. Came supplied with unfitted upper and lower mesh front grilles and full set of genuine mudflaps- bonus!
  13. Not too sure how you would get to know how many X types of any particular model were manufactured other than a direct request to Jaguar Customer Relations Department at Coventry. To see how many are left registered of any particular model or year try http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk but I warn you, you'll end up wasting hours of your life that you'll never get back, looking at all the old models of car that you used to own! Caveat emptor- use at your own risk! ;)
  14. Had the car serviced and M.O.T at Jag Leicester today, all good flew through M.O.T. Only advisories were - Corrosion to brake discs (Difficulty I have is it does not get driven all week so they do get surface rust) Rather smacks of we need to find something to comment on for the DOT inspectors Oil weep from sump gasket area (Quoted me £890 if I want this fixed??? This a ball ache job or something??) Absolute pig of a job for sure and nearly all of that is labour for dropping sub-frames etc in fact almost taking the engine out to replace a £20 gasket. Conclusion is the clue is in the word 'weep'- you are very slowly using a miniscule amount of oil, as long as it remains that way and you keep your eye on your oil levels weekly your engine will be no worse for this. My last X type 3.0 sport was exactly the same and the engine with 124k on it is still going strong having been transferred to another vehicle. When transferred the gasket was done as a matter of course and off the car it's an easy job. Slight coolant leak from thermostat housing to block (Quoted me £290 to fix this? Reasonable?) Not reasonable, even if you replace the stat, housing and gasket it should come to nothing near that. If you are having the job done then find a good Jag indy, should be at least half that. It might be a sealant additive should be tried first though, cost £10-£12 and see if that works. Transfer box duct missing (Not sure on this?) I'm not too sure on that one either but seem to recall it's no big deal to do. Other stuff noted was the gearknob worn Get yourself on Ebay, I recently got a used one for £10 which when fitted looked new after some leather conditioner. It literally unscrews and the new one screws on! slight kerbing to wheels Budget £40 to £50 per corner but make sure for that money that it's a full powder coat job not just a quick repaint, touch up. apparently rear heated screen causes poor radio reception when on which would explain why the later models have the shark fin aerial I guess. Common problem that and I can't remember the exact fix but a better way to spend some money is to get a Pure DAB fitted and then you'll never use FM again! But other than that 'happy days' 12 month MOT passed, better than getting your 'O' level results!! :D
  15. I'm not a diesel person but I know that many 'tractor' owners swear by adding some two stroke to the tank when they fill up. I can't remember, if I ever knew them, the quantities involved but it is supposed to aid smooth running a lot. A quick Google search or on other Jag forums should shed more light.
  16. Hi Mac Thanks for the photos. The black 3 way connector is a power supply for retro-fitting accessories such as a power point for a fridge, you've also got one hidden away behind the glovebox- nothing to do with the audio system but useful to know about in the future should you need to add anything. The cable that you have photographed is a fibre optic cable. The way the FO system works (bit long winded this) is there is one behind the dash that connects into you sat nav head unit all information passes down that cable to the rear and back up in a loop to the dash. This isn't power but digital signals currently carrying sat nav and phone information. What will have to be done is the FO are arranged in a daisy chain and if you were adding a CD changer, digital amp or voice system then the loop has to be extended. There are two ways of doing this either 1) Prior to fitting make up a daisy chain on the bench taking into account all the systems fitted. These have to go in a set order so on entering the boot is Cabin in>CDC>Phone>Voice>Nav>Amplifier>Cabin out- that is the full order but where something isn't fitted then it is simply dropped from the chain. 2) do it on the day. Preferred way would be prior number 1, the reason being that this is a fiddly job and one best not rushed and working under a magnifying glass under good light is just easier. Then on fitting day, the old FO is simply unplugged and the new plugged into your existing system and additions. What you do need to find is the power loom for CDC and as I said before this will be a clump of about a dozen wires of different colours all connected to a multi plug and probably wrapped in foam and pushed out of the way behind the inner wing. One other thing that occured to me is that as your car is a Sovereign, I take it it has piped leather seats? The reason I ask is that most Sovereigns came with the premium sound set up that included a digital amplifier in the boot. If it's got the amp, then this is part of the fibre optic network and has to be taken into account when building the daisy chain. If you're not sure you can ring Jaguar customer services 0845 3032 303 and they will get the factory build sheet of your car and email it to you- it tells you everything you need to know on there usually and is useful to have anyway. Anyway I'll wait to hear from you. Regards Phil
