I purchased a XKR yesterday some 150 miles away from home (High Wycombe A404 - M4 - A470 - A465) and loved the journey back, the car was so comfortable and responsive. The only drawback was that light was fading and not being familiar with the vehicle and its control switches etc I ended up turning things on/off until the desired option arrived. Looking forward to showing it off in the light of day now.

 

Anything I should look out for with this model? I assume timing chain rather than belt would that be correct?

I dont know much about the XKR but im sure someone will tell you if it has a chain or cambelt...

Hi Ken, welcome to the forum,i only joined a week or so ago,what year is your XKR...? early XK8...XKR are timing chains,they should have been changed at 60/65,000,check your service history,Later ones 2002+ are fitted with 4th generation chains and tensioners,probably need doing at 80,000 ish,cheers Trevor.

hi ken welcome to the club, you will love the xkr as the days roll by and you get out to play in it. and the looks you get in it. also you will get used to every other bmw audi merc driver trying to take you on had one yesterday guy in merc cla was racing me . wouldnt let me overtake him. i got my chance after a while and dropped into sport and took him  left it miles behind. charlie

The Euro lottery did not do its duty this week, so I will have to keep my S type for another week or so.

 

The s type is a very nice car   ----   it might well be my last car.  Staying fit gets harder when the moving bits are getting a bit worn,  I still have not put in an advert, though "Golf Clubs for sale".

Thank you Trevor, its a 2003 model with 54,240 recorded. Also verified with VOSA and HPI to cross check the mileage.

Hi Charles, I appreciate what you are saying and noted the car was quick on my journey home last night however, I currently own a 347bhp Merc SLK which is lighter than the XKR therefore, as you can appreciate I am used to the looks and boy racers trying (trying hard) to take me on without success :-)  Im fortunate to live in a small village on the edge of the Brecon Beacons (Penderyn) where the A4059 passes through and is a favourite test track for Richard Hammond. Seen him once or twice.

Please excuse my ignorance however, what are the main differences between the XKR / XKR-S? Without any research I'm assuming the latter is a sports version of the model which appears ironic in that the former produces 400bhp anyway although, I must say my supercharged V6 3.2 litre SLK appears to be just as quick producing 347bhp (R170 Model) Kind Regards, Ken

The main difference between the XKR and the XKR-S [when new] is just under £30k/.

 

The engines are of  the same size but what the engineers have done to the XKR-S is to increase its power by some mechanical/electronic wizardry that will let it do 186 mph when permitted. There will be other gubbins in the car also that will make it very nice to drive.

Thanks for that information Peter young chap :-) anyone know what plug type is used on the Jaguar for Diagnostics and where the socket is located on the XKR? I have software on my laptop that can maybe assist me in upgrading the power output myself although its more likely to be de-restricting the limiters. I currently have a 16pin plug which Mercedes and other German Cars use although it also fits my Son's Lotus Exige (not that I am nimble enough to get in the damm thing searching for the socket, he has to do that for me)
