I have been enjoying my new car, 1st Jaguar, and loving it, I have noticed a noisy tappet noise on start up, but this clears as soon as I blip the throttle.

Any suggestions or remedy for this?

 

The car is a 1998 4.0ltr

your oil maybe a bit thin or low  when was the last time it was changed, when i had a ford /vauxall which was prone for this sort of thing i changed the oil and all was good again. ( but saying this it was 20/50 oil with highish miles on the engines )

I agree with Ron a oil change would perhaps cure the problem because it sounds to be a automatic 

tappet adjuster sticking they work on oil pressure so when you flip the throttle the pressure adjusts it .???

thanks for the replies, the previous owner had just done an oil change on the car before I bought it, it has probably done less than 2000 miles since, I will check which oil it has as the remaining oil is in the boot, what is the recommended grade for this model?, maybe it is to thin?

The oil in the car is 10w 40 semi synthetic, which from what I have read is correct.

There is a additive you can use that is made to free off sticky valve lifters Ive never used one

so can't comment .----But i have heard of  --Wynns Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment --Get it from

Halfords I would think it would be cheaper than letting it get too bad and then have to replace parts.????

I have put in the Wynns treatment today, so hopefully that is going to cure the problem.

Unfortunately the Wynns treatment hasn't had any effect, so may have to run it in the garage for an opinion on getting it sorted.
