Hey folks,

Im wondering what the mileage recommendation is as to when to get the cam chains renewed ? My S Type is currently at 70038.

How many thousand miles is it to each change ?

I have the 2002 (51) 3.0 V6 Sport.

Thanks in advance.

Don't think there is a recommended mileage? That's the best bit about chain over belt.

Who recommend change, as Phil says, best thing about chains.

I'm having my wallet emptied on Thursday for a cambelt change

Who's doing your belt Andy? Have you ever used Mgs on coast rd near me.

No ones mentioned it but ive never had a car with chains before so wondered about it.

SO they dont need renewing ?

Only if there's a problem with them.

Chester jag centre in Ellesmere Port have the job, £360 all inc.

Rybrook wanted £600 all inc.

How labour charges can differ greatly is beyond me. There doing the same job using same parts? Ridiculous

The only problem associated with the chain is on high mileage cars, say 150k+ the tensioners start sticking and rattling.

I had it on my 3.0 petrol with 147k on it, on start up they rattled for a few minutes till the oil got warm.

Flush and good quality oil sorts it, other than that happy motoring!!

I know, Llandudno jag place wanted £500 when rybrook had an offer of £505 inc vat!!

I can understand a dealer having high labour charges because of overheads but still puzzling.

I'm not to keen on them at Llandudno. Same as the indi at stockport. Arrogant

WOW! Never knew that about cam chain... supposing mine is Ive not checked to be honest.

Chris, all petrol models, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 4.2 all have chains, only 2.7d has a belt which needs changing every 10 yrs or 105k.

Enjoy your car with the knowledge that you don't have to mess with it.

Suppose the benefits of chain is offset by the myther of changing the plugs in the left bank!!

Plug change is no problem if I don't have to worry about cam belts... good thing to know is its just had a new alternator put on with new belt. SO no belts to worry about!!

No worries there then.

To chance the plugs on the left bank requires the inlet manifold to be removed. Pig of a job that even main dealers fail to change them.

I nearly bought a car that was running rough a couple of years ago and the seller had plugs and coils changed on the right bank but still ran rough, spent too much at a dealer then decided to punt on.

Missed a bargain there!!

Where abouts in Yorkshire you from??

Hi all, just been to have a look and theres belts running the length of the front of the engine is this not cam belt ?

That's the auxiliary belt running alternator, aircon, power steering pump and water pump.

The chain is in the engine behind all that.

Here it is with the front alloy cover off

I changed my auxiliary belt recently and I found it a bit of a sod to be honest, glad I choose to fit a decent one so I don't have to worry about it again for the foreseeable. Similar to Andy's story, mine was running rough under high load and I took a punt it that it was nothing more serious than plugs and coil packs on the left bank. Luckily it wasn't and the problem is cured now, she goes better than expected TBH :)

I think its brilliant that I dont have to worry about cam belt changes, car had a new alternator put on before i bought it last week so I'd presume a new belt would of been fitted.. it looks new.

Didnt get a receipt.

Had my cambelt done today for a very reasonable £360.
