Hi, My 2009 XK60 has an annoying vibration that you can hear and feel through the accelerator pedal bang on 1200 revs, I've had it in the dealership as an exhaust rattle. They changed the rear heat shield, it improved it slightly, but it's still there. If I nudged the offside tailpipe the sound would disappear. I'm not sure it's the exhaust now. Anybody got any ideas?

Hi Graham -- Welcome to the Club--You say you dont think its the exhaust but I seem to

think that I would check that the exhaust isnt touching the body anywhere????

or if you have a exaust mount thats too tight .???

And after that I would check the engine mountings .???

I am thinking along the same line as Frank, for two reasons, the first being that when you nudge the tailpipe the sound would disappear, and the second is that the garage changed the heat shield.

Hi Peter, Thanks for the welcome, please confirm whether you mean the engine mount, or the exhaust mount. I'm thinking engine mount. Do you think this is expensive? I have a dealer warranty (Guy Salmon), Don't know whether that will cover it.

I would start with the tailpipe, and then check along the exhaust as far as you can go.  The engine mount is probably the last to check.  Anything loose, wearing or badly connected will cause vibration.

 

The good thing is that the vibration stops at 1200 rpm.

You get up early!! Both Guy Salmon and KwikFit have supposedly looked at the exhaust condition etc and found nothing.

I'm going to ask GS to look at the mounts.

Hi Graham if I can just ask this---When you hold the tail pipe can you move it about --say about 2in or so

in other words does it move OK --or is it tight ?????

You get an extra couple of days a year of life getting up early.

 

When I was working for a living I often had to go to Teesside from here - 180 miles --  and hating hotels, I would leave here at 5.00am, stop at a Transport Cafe for a bacon sandwich and a coffee, get to the Steelworks at 8.45 am, have my meetings, leave at 5.00 pm and get home by 8.00 pm.

 

Normally though I went to my Offices before 8.00 am as they were only 600 yards away.

 

Pester GS until they find the cause.

Hi Frank,

If you're familiar with the XK60, the exhaust is finished off with chrome tailpipe finishers protruding out of apertures on the special rear valance. These are virtually rock steady, almost no play whatsoever. I've done a test for engine mounts (foot on brake,in gear and slightly revving engine in forward and reverse). The engine doesn't rock at all, so I'm now fairly confident that the mounts are okay. I've ordered the propshaft tunnel heat shield now and am wondering whether that and a stainless exhaust system will finally cure the problem (though quite expensive). GS just want to keep charging me for any work done, even though they assured me the rear heat shield was going to solve it.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm just being pedantic, but the vibration is annoying. Has anyone else with an XK ever posted a similar problem?

Peter, The coffee and bacon sandwich sounds yummy!!!

The X150 had a resonance problem in the exhaust system which affected some but not all cars. A vibration could be felt through the foot pedals. Jaguar revised the mounting system which involves a revised clamp system - the cost from Jaguar is expensive for what you get which amounts to a couple of different clamps.

Your dealer should be able to call up a Jaguar Tech Bulletin which covers this subject and the approved fix.

Not sure if your year was affected but I'd push the dealer to check.

Hi,

A jubilant update, the car came out of Guy Salmon yesterday after having two clamps put on pertaining to Johns 'Bulletin No'.

All vibrations have now gone.

Deep sigh of relief and contentment and a big, no, BIG thankyou to John.

The staff member at GS contacted Jaguar with the latter agreeing to pay.

Not bad for a 6 year old car. So well done Jaguar.

The 'Duke' is now performing as he always should have.
