Tapping sound???

Featured Replies

hi all

a week ago iIbought my first jag and I'm so happy with it, it's a 2.5 v6 on an 01 plate, full service history and only done 1600 miles, it's in mint condition, BUT, there is a tapping sound coming from the engine, I've been all over it and can't tell what it is, it seems to be coming from the centre of the engine 'bulk head side' i thought it was a tappet at first but it's not fast enough for that, it's more like the sound you get when you have a stone in your tyre. I've listed to the belts and pulleys and they seem quiet, i have used 'tappet stop noise' in the oil, has any one else had this or can shed some light would be gr8

Hello m8,

yeh the sound is all the time hot or cold, it's 106,000 lol

Thanks for replying peter

Hi Andrew

Some of the members have mentioned before, encluding myself have noticed what sounds like a chain rattling which is to with the rear brakes. Can only be herd at speeds up to about 30 and then when windows are open. I had mine in to different people it disappears for a sometime but returns months later.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Are there any messages or does the engine warning light come on?

Otherwise, I would continue as normal, but at the same time  I would check out the tyres for that stone/nail etc.

I would also jack up the car and spin each wheel to see if the noise occurs.

Peter.

Frustrating isn't itI dre lol,

I've been all over the engine and mine seems to be coming from the centre, rear of the cylinder head, from what I have researched it could be a small exhaust manifold blow, (I'm not convinced of that by the way it sounds) or an injector seal in the fuel rail, I think my next step will be to have a look at them, if I find any thing i will let you know

Welcome to the club, Andrew.

Tapping noise?  I first heard this when I got my s type and my mobile mechanic was giving it  once over.

It appeared to be something warming and went away when the engine was at normal operating temperature.

Regards,

Peter.

thanks for your concern wheelo, pls keep me posted if you do find anything, cheers.

My tapping sound turned out to be a heat shield under the car. The fixing hole had become enlarged, 1 washer and the noise stopped.

fatcat1955,ive checked and confirmed the cause of the noise is not from the same spot just as your car. thanks for your concern.
