S-Type R

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I am a new member and in the market for an S-type-R looking to trade in my E46 M3 due to needing more door as I am having my first child, also the M3 costs a fortune to maintain. I have been down to swallow jaguar today to look at two black ones that they have for sale the cars look good and had no issues that I could see. I have done plenty of reading on the internet and see that the s-type can suffer with electrical gremlins and the 'lurch' would there be any other common issues that I should be looking at?. The car I like has 65k on the clock and is 04 facelift should there be any major maintenance that should of be carried out by now e.g. belt/chains things like that.

Thank you for reading and sorry for all the questions..

Ben

Welcome to the club, Ben.

With 65k on the clock  it is just run in.

I don't think there is a problem with chains at all, but some members have changed the gearbox oil at around 70k in spite of the "Sealed for life" in the owners manual.

The s type is a great car to drive and a head turner.

Regards,

Peter.

From experience, cooling system seems prone to rot and the aircon/climate control can develop some expensive failures, specifically the three way valve at the front can fail and can spike the controller.

Hello and welcome.

The S type R is an amazing vehicle and will out perform most things on the roads.

The main thing to look for on a 11 yr old car is rust, especially behind the plastic sill trims and on the rear subframe.

Electrical gremlins aren't too common but are usually down to a degrading battery. Try and budget for a good quality new one if its old.

Other things to look out for, especially on an R model is the condition of the tyres and brakes, quite pricey to replace so, again, use that as a bartering tool.

An 04 will have the zf 6spd box which has documented problems with lurch but, at 64k should be fine.

Also, the engine has a chain, only the 2.7d has a belt.

Everything else is the same with any "old" car, just make sure everything works.

Thank you for the friendly replays

I was under the illusion that the 04 facelift cars were better but i still should be worried about the lurch/gearbox. Believe it not the parts are not that expensive compared to my M3. Not driven the cars yet as they have not been through there prep going back next week to have a go...should be fun.
