Rough running/smoke 2.0 diesel

Featured Replies

Hello, everyone. First post.

While my son spends a year abroad, I have become the custodian of his 2007 2.0 diesel, which I find an absolute pleasure to drive. Recently, however, it has started running a bit roughly when accelerating from low revs in a high gear, and there is noticeable  smoke when accelerating away after idling at traffic lights. Does anybody have any idea whether this is a simple fix? He is returning quite soon. Do I bite the bullet and book it in, or simply say to the lad "It was ok when I used it last"!!!  Performance is still fine, and the car still returns well over 45mpg and occasionally over 50 when I drive like an elderly spinster.

Many thanks in advance.

Iain

hi iain.   start by looking in the( forum) click on x type and view the posts that you think may be linked to the problem your having. but hey i think it wont be long till you get some sound advice on what to do..

Hi Iain, and welcome to the club.

My son has a x type 2.0D diesel, and he had some black smoke too.  I went to Halfords and got a can of Diesel Magic to clean the injectors, as back smoke is a fuel problem.  That should do it.

If you are feeling generous, you could get the Terraclean service for his Birthday present which is well worth the £120 it will cost.

Just google "Terraclean" and it will come up with the nearest garage that does the service.

Regards,

Peter.

Well, at £6.49, diesel magic has to be worth a punt. I'll let you know how it goes!

I've always been a bit sceptical regarding the claims made for fuel and oil additives, but put a bottle into a tank less than quarter full and gave the old girl a blast at high revs in third up and down a local dual carriageway. Seems to have done the trick! Seems to run smoother and pick up a bit better as well.

I'll recommend he puts a bottle into a full tank every six months or so to keep things hunky dory.

Thanks for the help!

Hi, I am a newbie to this site but have used its advise to solve my problem of black smoke when accelerating. I tried the fuel additives and then the Terraclean but no joy. I then noticed people mentioning split intercooler pipes, and yes you guessed it a 9cm split. I followed a you tube video and fitted the new part, not easy but manageable. Result no more black smoke , mileage up from around 40 to 48mpg so am very happy. I would therefore say to a big thank you to everyone who has posted solutions to black smoke problems, it certainly helped me.

I have black smoke coming from my exhaust and cars a bit jerky acceleration and having read the comments.u have all helped me sleep easier tonight as I was worried it was something expensive.thanks from new member

Welcome to the club, Jim.

My son has a Jaguar x type that had the same issue.  Can of Diesel Magic plus using premium fuel cured  both the smoke and the jerky running almost instantly.

Black smoke is usually a fuel system warning that can be rectified easily.

Regards,

Peter.
