Expansion Tank Gasket

Hi All,

I've got a water leak on my 2004 S-Type and it appears to be coming from around the expansion tank gasket.

Like most other folk here, I used to work on cars when I was younger, so I'm not totally green. But todays jags are a whole different ball game.

So my question is this: Is this an easy job to do or one best left to the pros? If I can do it, are there any instructions on the net on how to do it. I've got most tools.

Cheers,

Nick

*Thanks anyway, but closer inspection reveals I need a replacement expansion tanks. Where's the best place to get parts quickly?

Hi Nick,

I have a leaky expansion tank, so this may well be relevant to me! I haven't taken the trim panel off above the tank but may do this this afternoon, so I can have a look and comment further. But I'd imagine DIY, not like you're pressing our suspicion bushes or anything heavy. Where would the gasket be? I'd imagine all connection were via the hoses and hose clips?

Hopefully someone knows more, or I may be able to advise later if I get around to having a look myself

Good luck, Russ

Hi Russ,

I found my leak was the top plastic hose connector. Apparently this is a common problem. The only way is to replace the whole expansion tank as it can't be fixed.

At the moment I'm searching around to find out who stocks them and try and get a good price.

Cheers, Andy. I'm pretty sure that's the one, and a good price too. Are they easy to fit?

I did mine a few months ago. Fairly easy although there isn't a lot of room to get your hands in there and yank the old tank out! I suggest draining the system first or you'll have coolant gushing everywhere. Most important tip is to check the clip on the bottom hose when fitting the new tank - can look like its on properly but if it isn't it will ping off under pressure!

Hi Dan,

Unfortunately, I lost the clip while replacing the tank. Stupid thing to do. I'm searching for a replacement now.
