S type won't start

Featured Replies

I have not long since bought a 02 S type 3.0l, the car has been sat for approx 2 years. On charging the battery the car would not start, until after holding and turning the ignition key numerous times it then started. Once turned off again though the same problem happened, any ideas folks?

Hi Sean....welcome to the Forum

I would probably replace the battery if it has sulphated over time it will never allow the full current through the various electrical/electronic systems and can cause you many other problems.

It's always a good place to start before condemning any other components.

Hi

If you left the car with less than half a tank of fuel, the fuel drains out of the pump, as the fuel pump is quite high in the tank

they can sometime go rusty slightly and seize up

get you car battery fully charged, when you turn the ignition on, the fuel pump should come on for a few seconds and go off and then come on permanent when the engine starts

keep the charger on it, dont try to start it till you hear the fuel pump cycle

Ive seen this happen on a lot of cars that have stood

usually switching the ignition on and off and keep cycling this will free the pump off, like I think it did on yours, once it starts you need let it run for a good while

cheers

Cheers for the comments, however the problem is not with the fuel pump or line I don't think, as the starter motor will not engage or even turn over when the key is turned?

Hi

Maybe not then, Do you get a clicking noise when you turn the key

I just assumed it was cranking over and not starting

starter motors are prone to sticking when stood for long periods

suppose I would start with the basics, battery fully charged, fuel and fuel pump are running, spark and also its turning over cranking

cheers

Joe
