Rear Brake Pads and Discs

Featured Replies

Hello, Im just about to sort the rear brake discs and pads and understand that i will have to wind in the caliper. Can anyone tell me the process to do this please?

It has the electronic parking brake.

Cheers

Stuart

My car has the mechanical handbrake and I don't have any direct experience of the Jaguar EPB set up so I don't know what the calibration procedure is, if indeed there is one.

However I will say this; Don't wind the piston right back as it will likely cause a problem with the EPB. Just go far enough to get the pads in and no further.

Some pistons can be wound back in by hand and some will be a struggle with a wind back tool and the bleed nipple undone, it seems to be a bit of a lottery. My pistons go in clockwise and I had to use a wind back tool but was able to leave the nipples alone..

This is the generic one below, I paid about £15 for mine. There are of course clockwise and anti-clockwise versions.

PS. I did find that putting the plate of the tool in the caliper in the way that looks "right" actually tilts the whole tool so that the pins don't engage properly on the piston crown. I put the plate in "upside down" and it was better but not great.

Thinking about it now a quick massage of the plate with an angle grinder would have been the solution.

HI

first release the park brake and press the park brake down and turn the ignition off and pull the key out, park brake will stay off now

remove the rear caliper and pads, the wind the piston back with a tool like ralphs picture above

refit discs, pads and caliper, you might want to adjust the piston on the caliper, so the caliper fits on snug, no large amount of play, but not too tight it binds

the you need to disconnect the battery and reconnect, you will get a message now saying apply the parking brake, press the brake pedal a few times so its hard, the apply the EPB

and thats it

cheers

Joe

Thank You I have a better Idea of what im doing with it now.

Next Job.

Cheers

Stuart

Similar to Laz, I bought a generic caliper winder specifically for the Jag brakes. I always got away with using a G clamp beforehand, but these pistons need rotating as well. If ordered in advance online they are considerably cheaper than Halfrauds, where I was forced to go as my car was in pieces and and I was at an impasse!
