Hi new to the forum, have had a look around for a solution to my problem with no avail, I really hope one of you lovely people will be able to assist.

So ill start with the car

2004 2.0d X-Type estate with approx 165k and a very good service history.

now on with the problem, starting from the beginning,

So this morning I got flagged down by a friend informing me my reverse lights are on permanently, I completed my journey around 5 miles, and decided to have a quick look, as I was in a rush I decided a simple solution to the problem untill tommoeow was to pull the fuse for reverse lights and parking sensors ( sensors don't work currently, just a long bleep ), this solved the issue with the light so decided to go indoors however when I tried to lock the car nothing, the remote fob wasn't working, I figured the fob had lost coding so tried to decode it however it just wouldn't beep, so I removed the battery cables for about 30 secs reconnected and now the fob is working, however my indicators and main beam are not, my interior lights won't go out, the lights on my dials don't work unless turning the side light or dipped beams on.

so basicly my indicators and high beams are not working, my interior lights will not turn off unless I lock the car, and the illumination on my dials when ignition is on.

I have checked every fuse in the car, all seem good, I've checked the switch on the stalk, also the hazards are still working however they don't flash on the dials..

hope someone can help as I'm away on holiday this Friday also got work all this week and need the car.

Thanks all

Welcome to the Club, Duane.

First job is to check your battery  Failing batteries are often the cause of such issues.

Others moe electrically minded will also be along to offer some good advice.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi

Reverse lights, is your car auto or manual

have you tried putting the reverse lights fuse back in and see if the other things start to work

also make sure your battery is fully charged

cheers

hi guys, thanks for the responses, battery has been checked and seems good, I have put fuse back in and still the same issues. And it is a manual gearbox buddy.

as an update turns out my intermittent wipers no longer work although others do, and my rear wiper also no longer works, all of these were still working before the battery was disconnected while the reverse light issue was there. :(

Hi

reverse lights is just controlled from a switch on the side of the gearbox, you could just unplug it to prove it and link the plug/connector to bring the reverse light on

may be worth checking the fuse box not got water inside it,

and might be worth following the wiring back from the gearbox reverse switch, just in case the wiring damaged and it was causing your faults

have attached a wiring diagram and workshop manual, hope it helps

cheers

Joe

so I've been checking over a few bits n bobs, I've noticed the indicators still illuminate with the hazards and arming or disarming the car, also I can get main beams to illuminate with the button on the fob, leading me to believe there is nothing wrong with the fuse box, I am going to disconnect the reverse switch once I find it,

Update.

I've removed plug for the reverse sensor, lights still came on, checked the connector and the wires leading off it, the wires had melted together causing a constant circuit, separated these and plugged back into the switch and tested reverse lights now work as they should, however this also turned the indicators on the dash to constantly on, both sides and just the dash not on exterior of the car so I unplugged connector and fuse however this didn't cure the indicator on dash issue, so I pulled battery cables off again and that has cured the issue with the indicators on dash, I have followed the wires from the reverse switch as far as I can and looks like the damage only goes back about 3 - 4 inches, I am now thinking would it of caused an issue with the gem ?

Hi

Cant see it would of caused any other issue, as the short would of just bought the reverse lights on

I'd be tempted put your battery on charge over night, as the short might of drained the battery slightly, causing issues

cheers

in regards to battery, I've checked it and seems fine, I will put on charge tonight however would I not see issues with starting etc if battery was low, as it starts first time doesn't seem to strain etc ?

so after checking the battery again, I decided to have another look at the reverse sensor wiring, turns out it was in a right state removes this and repaired the damage it had caused and all is now good and working thanks for the help guys and hope I can return the help in the future
