Members Tyre Choice.................

Featured Replies

I have a (Dec) 2003, S-Type 3.0 litre SE, currently on Avon 235 / 50 ZR 17   96 Y tyres. They still have plenty of tread although the last MOT in October "suggested" - (Advisory) that they needed replacement  due to uneven wear (potholes / road conditions) and side wall perishing. i am trying to find a low noise, fuel efficient, effective wet grip / braking tyre (aren't we all ?) that will not break my slender purse. I have read good (Jaguar owner) reviews and located at a reasonable price (£109 - Black Circles) a tyre that comes pretty close, it is; Falken ZE 914. I would be very grateful to hear of what fellow members prefer or think of this particular choice, thank you. Dominic

My S-Type is very similar yours, it came with Avons that were starting to perish. I went with the Jaguar recommendation of Pirellis (P Zero Assymetrico). They were expensive but it was like driving a different car, so much better than the Avons.

Hi Richard,

Okay great - I will have a look for these particular Pirelli's, your recommendation is very much appreciated as tyres can make a world of difference, as you know !!

Thanks again, Kind Regards

Dominic

Hi Richard,

My XF-S (2011, bought a year ago) arrived with Chinese 'Triangle' branded tyres, which were truly 'interesting' in the wet.

Quickly swapped for a set of Pirelli P-Zeros (255/35-20), car was transformed!

Good luck with your search, mine were roughly £200 a corner at Quik-Fit, plus a few £££s for tracking adjustment. Next job is to get the wheels refurbished, but the plastic 'blades (5 needed per wheel) seem to be incredibly expensive!

Cheers,
Jon

Managed to crash by BMW Z3 on cheap Chinese tyres that came with a set of replacement wheels....LETHAL in the wet is definitely an understatement!!!  I would not recommend anyone to buy these dangerous tyres that are currently flooding the UK market, spend some money and buy branded or at least not Chinese.

Hi all, I am currently considering the purchase of an XF S and as I do over 20,000 miles a year tyres are a big issue. I currently have a Mercedes cls 320 CDi and put a set of rear tyres on every 6-8000 miles - that's usually three sets a year and one set of fronts.

With the S having 20 inch wheels the cost could mount up considerably looking at the cost of premium tyres. I used to fit Continentals on the merc but decided to try some cheaper and have ended up with Evergreen tyres. I have not noticed any difference in noise or grip in either wet or dry conditions and they last the same amount of miles saving me around £45 per corner.

Can anyone tell me if the xf s uses rear tyres at the same rate or is it better than the merc - most of my miles are motorway use.

has anyone used Evergreen or Landsail on the xf s?

many thanks

Hi Edwin,

I have 2011 XF-S with the 20" wheels. Soon after I bought it in October 2018 I had to replace the tyres as those fitted (Chinese 'Triangle' brand) were simply not up to the job in the wet and not much better in the dry.

I went for Pirelli P-Zeros and the car was transformed.

It's now about 15,000 miles later and there's still some life left in all four of them after a mixture of long motorway trips, local shopping trips and everything in between.

Good luck with the XF-S if you go for it, I take mine for a spin just for the hell of it most days!

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your reply. The reason for the question is that I currently put three rear sets on the cls every year and if the xf s was the same it woculd be beyond economic for me to run as 20"tyres are almost double the price of the 18" ones I have now.

I have found Avon tyres to be offering some of the worst quality tires out there, wear rate is uneven, low mileage, perishing and even bulges from tire wall damage. Only slightly better than the Chinese brands and 4x the price. I have Toyo tires fitted on my Jag and they are a good all-rounder and half the price of the big 3.

Thanks Justin for your recommendation - I appreciate your comments. Others have also said Avon's are not what they perhaps used to be - certainly mine wore unevenly, parished on walls etc. They were 6 yrs old it transpires !! I have gone to Falken Ziex - 914 Ecorun 235 / 50 R17 - a complete set all done at £439.44 (Black Circles). Terrific write up, excellent reviews. I'm delighted with them - seem quieter and excellent in the wet. Thanks again, Dominic
