Hi, New Member after many years as a Mercedes Owner ,just bought a 2003 X Type 2.0L V6 Sports.

Have a problem and need some advice please, the temperature gauge on the dashboard cluster is not working correctly, the needle moves but not into the zone area indication of cold to hot, has anyone any idea what this might be ,I am thinking the fault may be in the pc board in the cluster and am thinking or replacing the dashboard cluster, it is relatively easy to remove and refit, any ideas on what is causing the temperature needle to not operate correctly would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Hi Barrie,

I would first of all find the temp sender and remove the wire and try earthing it directly to the engine or radiator to see if the gauge moves straight to hot position..

If so means the sender unit is duff.

Hi Chidders,Thank you for your reply, the only gauge which is not working is the temperature gauge, the indicator does move from the bottom of the gauge to the cold stop position, just a thought, if I could remove the gauge and re calibrate and line up the indicator needle at the Cold position perhaps this is the problem ,in other words has the needle gone below the the cold stop position and something is preventing the needle from moving correctly on the cold/hot scale ??

All replies would be appreciated

Many thanks

Just had a thought, are there any Instrument  Tech Guys out there who can advise, All of the Gauges except for the Temp Gauge are all working fine. If I can remove the  temp indicator needle which at the moment appears to be working as it does move as the temp goes up but is below the zero mark on the Gauge. If  I remove the actual gauge needle and re align it to the Zero position on the gauge . it may rise to the correct level as the engine temp rises, this might be all that is wrong with it. Any Instrument Tech Members out there who could tell me if this is possible, I don't want to buy another instrument panel if this can be fixed by this simple method.

All replies will be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

Hi Guys

Bit of an error. I should have said the Temperature needle at the moment is well below the COLD Mark on the Gauge but it does move up when the engine gets warm, maybe taking the Needle off and re setting it so that the Needle is actually on the COLD Mark Gauge indication before the engine is started might cure the problem and the Temperature Needle might rise to between Cold and Hot when the engine warms up, maybe somehow the Needle has got loose and fallen below the Cold Mark on the Gauge

Hope thats a bit clearer what I am am trying to do

All help would be appreciated

Cheers Guys

Hi Guys

Any answers from any Tech Guys out there, I think I may have to contact the manufacturer VISTEON Direct to ask the question

Cheers

You are getting too technical.

Try what BM Chidders suggested and work from there. You can also test it with a resistance meter.

If you are going to remove the gauge then either have a new one or a second hand one with you to change it over.

Presumably the heater is working so that would rule out the thermostat?

Hi Steve

The Heater is working fine so that does rule out the Thermostat ,I still think the needle gauge is the problem that it has somehow gone below the Cold Mark when it should be aligned with it ,and as the Indicator is moving as the engine warms up it should be between the Cold and Hot midway on the temp gauge, not off the scale at the bottom and then midway to the Cold indication mark on the dial

Hi Steve,

Hopefully will tackle removing the Temp Gauge indication needle this weekend, will post how it goes, it might seem a bit technical but having an electronics company makes you think this way and maybe you are right about the technical aspect, anyway thanks for your replies Steve always pleased to have a bit of banter.

Cheers Mate, Take Care & be Safe

Hi Guys, well eventually got round to tackling the Temp Gauge problem on my X type, I removed the Dash Panel , easy job only 10 mins work , I took apart the Gauges and removed the Temp Gauge Needle very carefully from the center sprocket and re-aligned it to the o position on the Gauge, reassembled the unit refitted the Dash and as an added precaution I replaced the coolant Sensor this again was an easy fix , My Temperature Gauge is now reading correctly so well worth the effort
