I've done about 2500 miles over the last week, (parents visiting from abroad and travelling the UK to visit family) and this morning I noticed a strong burning smell when I got home from Gatwick airport after dropping off. Lifted the bonnet and I can hear a rattling noise that I believe to be the water pump. If the pump has gone then this would surely determine the smell as one of the belts could likely be rubbing?

As I'm pushing 100k miles, the cam belt is soon due and am wondering whether to get this replaced at the same time, as water pumps generally get replaced with cam belt changes anyway.

Should I go through Jaguar or would my local independent be capable? I have a 2010 3.0 V6 sport. I am sure the price difference would be phenomenal?

Does not sound great. Where is the rattling coming from and what sort of sound is it making?

Its sound like a spinning rattle from the front of the engine. I will need to remove the covers to confirm.

I would get it looked at a.s.a.p. as it sounds like something that could be due to fail completely and that could be expensive.

If it is the water pump - I believe they are known to fail - I would definitely get the cam belt done at the same time.

It wasn't the water pump, but the fan pulley. It looks as though the alternator was replaced relatively recently, but before I purchased the car. Its not on the service history. Garage claim that when it was fitted, the belt was over tight and had a knock on effect on the pulley, which in turn, broke.

Saved a few quid on the cam belt for now, but it will still need replacing later this year I suspect.

At least you found the issue and sorted it.
