Hi, I've had a Series III XJ6 since '92 and just recently bought a used '04 X-Type. I know they didn't rate very well, but I've ogled over their looks since they came out. I just had to wait for their used price to come down. The XJ6 was my first love, but it has been a hobby to keep her running. The X-Type has an intermittent brake problem. I'm hoping I can get some help with that once I learn how to use this resource. I'll go read the forums for now and post something later.

Thanks for replying to my intro. My X-Type has two problems with the brakes that both may be related

to the ABS system. Occasionally, when I first start to move, the brake peddle is very hard and barely

slows the car. If I pump the peddle a few times it returns to normal. That sounds like a master cylinder

problem, except for the second problem I have with the brakes. Again, occasionally, while driving at

freeway speeds, the steering wheel starts "shuddering". It gets worse and worse. I discovered that

applying the brakes sharply will make this problem go away. Any guesses? Thanks in advance. Tracy

Welcome to the club Tracy

I guess it is similar to when you press the brake pedal when the engine is off?

The shuddering could be the ABS.. but it could be your brakes are locking on slightly and the disk is over heating, thus warping the disk.

When this happens, pull over, get out and put your hands near the disks (don't touch them ) to see if there is a lot of heat, try all 4 and if only one is very hot then you could have sticky brake caliper, worn/ceized sliders

But to be honest, you should seek advice from a specialist.
