  1. It is a fact, that most sidewipes that hit motorcycles are done by VOLVO drivers, who can't even see a white bus approaching . Also women in Volvos doing the school run. The old type of "typical Jag driver" is personified by "Bamber Gasket" of Private Eye, back in the 60s. Anyone remember his motoring column? He had a "souped up Jag" and always ended his report from the "casualty unit , Milton Keynes" or from a police station.
  2. I have another light come on - it's the bottom right one, looks like a radiator? The coolant is topped up OK. Oh yes, the oil pressurehas come back, I expect it is a dodgy "transducer" there
  3. I think it is actually called a "transducer" , and I see David Manners stocks them.
  4. There is pressure, the motor would have blown up by now. No noises, and pleanty of oil in the camshaft box when running as well. I think the sender is on the right of the filter and could have had the connection loosened when I changed the filter.
  5. XJ 4 litre 1995 . My gauge was showing a good correct pressure until suddenly NO pressure and oil light comes on. There have also been sudden returns to normal. Oil level OK and it is clear there is no real drop at all. What is the trouble?

  7. I have now put a real Jaguar filter on, and filled it with oil before fitting , now everything seems OK! so, always use the right parts. I should know by now! The car runs really well. The wife and I both think it is better, quieter, smoother etc than the 1997 Brooklands Turbo Bentley we had . Except the Jag cost me a TENTH of the money I paid for the Bentley.
  8. Yes, and I asked for the correct one for this car at a reputable parts shop! so I have sent off for a real jaguar one. At least I proved that you can change the oil and filter without a garage ramp or portable ramps, I just jacked the nearside front up a couple of inches. you need long arms and to be quite thin.
  9. I just changed the oil, and filter, on my 1995 XJ6. But when it started up, the oil light would not go out. So I got the old filter and put it back, oil light went off! I noticed that the old one seemed to have a valve inside, the new one didn't. Anyone else have this trouble?
  10. get an old Double Six or jag V12 , carb model, I had one, a 1972 model, I could get 8 MPG in town, 15 on motorways. Then go back to your present car!
  11. It started when they decided that CO2 was a pollutant and suddenly forgot about the real ones, like Nitrous and nitric oxide, carbon Monoxide etc. The loony left would have us all on pedal bikes and rickshaws.
  12. Probably large diesels like trucks will be left alone but we will be "encouraged " to switch to petrol - just like we all switched to diesel because it was so cheap (remember?) Of course , we once had electric buses in London . They were all scrapped for "modern" diesles.
  13. we used to get the engine hot then put a bit of REDEX in each cylinder and leave overnight. Spin the motor to remove any excess then replace plugs and start - huge cloud of white smoke but often, better running .
  14. the Government is about to persecute diesels! That will cause a lot of vexation.
  15. Back in the 50's and 60's 20 mpg was considered quite good economy. I have a 1953 Lanchester , 2litre , that does 22MPG. back in the 60.s I never had a car good enough to get that, and I mean a Ford prefect, Vauxhall Velox and a Standard Vanguard, all did about 12 MPG due to worn out engines. My present Jag an X 300 4 litre does about 20-25 . but I don't care , after 2 Rolls and a Bentley it seems OK, and I have a Mercedes diesel for cheap journeys.
  16. In the good old days , we bought a Jag to go fast, not save money. I had an XJ6 , 1966, about 16 MPG . So I got a Double Six carb model (1972) which did about 13 but could easily get down to 8MPG in London traffic. I drove daimler D420 limos with the 4.2 engine, these could do as low as 4MPG in London traffic.
  17. Has anyone ever heard of WATER used to de-coke? You run the engine at a fast tickover and trickle water through the induction. I did it on my 1953 Lanchester , I ran about a litre through. Some bus companies used to use this system . I don't know what effect it would have on modern systems with detectors etc. But it seemed to work on the old Lanchester.
