  1. I just come across this and thought it may help you ??? --- My XJ8 4.0 Sovereign which has a ZF5 HP 24 gearbox has just had a transmission fluid change at 103K miles so I thought I’d share these notes that I made about the process. The job itself requires the car to be raised and on a level surface. Ideally a 2 or 4 post ramp but, as long as you don’t do anything stupid when it comes to step 13, I don’t see why regular ramps or axle stands wouldn’t work. It takes around an hour to do and requires no special tools. I bought a change kit from British Parts for a little over 100 quid delivered and it included 6 litres of fluid, a filter, a sump gasket and a filter seal. It didn’t include a crush washer for the bottom pan plug. 1. Warm fluid to normal operating temperature 30-40 degrees. 2. Remove bottom pan plug and drain fluid from pan. 3. Remove screws and drop off oil pan. 4. Check for swarf in the bottom of the pan and on magnets in bottom of pan. 5. Remove oil filter – usually two retaining screws. 6. Fit oil seal to new filter and lubricate with Vaseline. 7. Refit filter and tighten to 5 Nm. 8. Clean pan and magnets. 9. Refit pan – tighten screws in criss-cross pattern from middle of the pan to 10 Nm. 10. Refit drain plug and seal to 30 Nm. 11. Remove fill plug from side of box and fill with 4-6 litres of oil until oil flows from fill plug. 12. Install fill plug. 13. Start car and allow oil to circulate. With foot on brake to stop wheels turning, engage gears in the following order. a. Reverse b. Drive c. Third d. Park e. Put handbrake on. 14. Run until fluid temperature reaches 30-40 degrees. 15. Remove fill plug and let excess fluid drain out or top-up with more fluid. 16. Refit fill plug and tighten to 35 Nm. ??? It looked like it had been in the car since 1999
  2. Hi Antony -A big welcome to the club and I hope you will enjoy your XJ8 the first thing I can think of is to check the oil level or i would change the gearbox oil ???. Frank.
