    NUTS!

With the help of a specialist nut removal tool, I have now snapped the whole of the top of the nut off. It must be on ridiculously tight! I think I'm going to have to chain drill the sides of the nut out to remove. I could insist the mechanic who overtightened it does this work, but they also do my MOT's and are generally excellent. So I think I'll have a go and only pass it to them if I can't do it. Not ideal though
  2. Have you got pics of your car then Jon?
  3. It'll probably come with the bracket, mine did, but worth checking if you're buying without seeing a picture of it 1st. I got mine from eBay for £30...
  4. Okey dokey, it's a few months since I did it and mine was swapping out one for the other, so I'm sure you're right, I just don't remember the D2B lead
  5. Isn't the thing in Joe's picture a DVD for the satnav? In mine the CDC sits in the gap below this and I thought it connected with the below connector. I had a quick look but cant get to it without removing the trim, but does the CDC need the D2B cable, or the one pictured?
  6. Hey Tristan, Well done you! There was a post last year about whether Jags were old man's car, and you're helping prove the point they don't have to be! The X100 XXR Coupe is an awesome bit of kit, I came very close to getting one last year but the right one didn't turn up. Now I'm holding out for the newer X150 which I hope to get next year. Good luck with it and keep us posted on how you get on Cheers, Russ
  7. I posted about this last year, as I'd changed to clear indicator repeaters and wondered if I could do similar with the reflectors. In the end I decided not to paint over or vinyl wrap as I think that on balance they are a safety feature. But if there was an option to have them reflective but clear (not orange) in colour, I'd go for that. So very interested in Joe's idea of moulding them, I'll potentially have a set if this was possible Joe! I have a laser cutting business, working with a lot of plastics, so if I could be of any assistance here, I'd be happy to help
  8. Hi David, There are marks on the tank, from memory about 1/2 way up where the join is. The expansion tanks have a tendency to crack and leak, so keep an eye on levels in case this is an issue with yours. Top up first and if it doesn't improve, you could have the AC regassed, when I last had mine done they put a tracker dye in to identify any leakages. Don' know about the failsafe mode, not enough info. Good luck!
  9. In case it wasn't clear, I was being a bit tongue in cheek! I'm sure the diesels are great as well, and if I was doing a lot of miles, an S-Type diesel with a remap to make it similar power to the 3.0 petrol, would be a great choice I'm sure
  10. Ha ha, that's the spirt David, so we're advising Gary to forget diesels and get a petrol S-Type Sport or 4.2V8, or perhaps an XK150? Sounds good to me
  11. Hey Fraze, Welcome to the club! Do you still have the S-Type or just the X-Type estate? Hope you get her sorted! Cheers, Russ
  12. I swapped out a CDC as I had a missing cartridge and it was very simple, but this was a straight swap and already had the leads and bolts in place...
  13. Very nice Leo, I'm hoping to add an X150 to the fleet in a year or so
  14. Nice choice! But check for corrosion underneath, they suffer!
  15. Hi Peter, At £15 for a new repair kit, not sure I need to go second hand, but I'm happy to take advice, especially from an expert like Denis. Not sure if I'm getting lazy or just just don't like having the car in bits without being able to fix her, so if it's possible to buy the part before disassembly, that's my preferred option . Cheers, Russ
  16. Happy New Year to everyone and wishing a great 2017 to us all! To those who followed the previous threads about it, I've had the staggered rear alloys fitted with the 275/35/18 Nexens, and IMHO, they fill out the rear arches very nicely, picture is attached: Unfortunately they did raise an issue caused by 1: Over torquing of the rear nuts, by the garage who fitted the tyres 2: Well meaning but inexpert assistance while removing wheels to paint the brake calipers 3: Using the standard wheel wrench which was somewhat worn and stretched. This resulted in a number of the rear wheel nuts being badly damaged and the chrome tops being distorted. Luckily I had some spare nuts after fitting locking wheel nuts, and being careful, and using an 18mm hex head on those that had had the chrome tops ripped off, I managed to save all but one of the nuts, which is now completely FUBAR, as per the attached picture. I may see if I can persuade the mechanic who fitted the tyres (and over tightened the nuts) to take pity on me and help out. I do not want to damage the alloys so I wondered if anyone knows of a technique or device to remove a damaged wheel nut? For interest I have replaced the standard wrench / brace with this one from eBay, it fits in the standard foam insert and is considerably better that the original. Any help / comments appreciated
  17. Hi all, I have an issue on my offside rear window dropping down and not coming back up under power. I've wedged it as a temporary expedient but will get in there over the next weeks to have a look. Sounds like teeth / cable slipping on the motor / regulator as the switch fires the motor, it just won't go up. There are repair kits on eBay for not much, wonder if it's worth grabbing one of these so I don't need to go in twice, has anyone used them before (above is a link etc). Thanks, Russ
  18. Ha ha, that's pretty funny Andy! I remember when I started driving, myself and my contemporaries (I'm 48) thought we were the sensible ones as we'd only have a pint or 2 if driving, whereas the older guys would have a skinful and still drive. Now there appears to be a zero tolerance (intolerance!) to having anything to drink at all, despite there being a set limit. I'm not condoning drink / drunk driving, but my view is if you stay within the limit and take care, you're hardly the Antichrist that society appears to want you make you out to be nowadays. Luckily myself and my better half share the driving, I drive to the pub and she drives home
  19. Hey Chris, Good luck with this, interested in finding out myself as an alu bonnet would be a cool additional, and my 2001 bonnet is a little battle scarred. I have paint code JHM, Pacific Blue, is this your colour? Cheers, Russ
  20. Hey Jason, Glad to hear you got it sorted! The guy should've known if it was safe and the wheels have a fair amount of alloy on them, so hopefully it looks good and will serve you well. I just fitted my staggered rims with the 275/35's and they look pretty awesome! I came quite close to picking up an X100 XKR back in the summer, but held off, and now the prices seem on the rise (good for you!), so I'm going to hold out now for the newer X150 XKR. Still loving my S-Type, which is coming on nicely, so this is fine with me All the best, Russ
  21. Ha ha, forgot to say at the time that this is brilliant and I want one! Is there a pattern Andy, or any tips for the knitter? Thanks, Russ
  22. Well done Phil, congratulations! Hopefully she'll give you years of pleasure, it's a lot of car for the money, I imagine you pad a tiny % of the original buy price! She's a big and complicated beast, and in my view maintenance is better than repair, so factor in spending a bit on getting her / keeping her tiptop, and you won't go far wrong. It's only those who seem surprised cars actually need money spending on them occasionally that end up disappointed / disillusioned! Cheers, Russ
  23. Hi Sarah, S-Type prices are on the floor and this is a good time to buy not sell! As Joe says, check eBay, Parkers and perhaps Autotrader, you're unlikely to achieve more than £2K, could be even less than that, are you sure you want to sell? The fact that you've owned for a good while is a sell point, but my recommend would be to keep her! Good luck, Russ
  24. Yup, if the water was fresh and there was no corrosion, indicating a leak over a longer period, I'm with Andy that it's not an issue. Worse case scenario is replacing boot seals which I think has been covered on the forum before. Could be a winner then
  25. Good link from Frank re MOT history, didn't know about that! It takes mine all the way back to 2006 where she failed on a pitted rear disc and a leaking power steering pipe! I've printed it out and added it to the history
