First Jag

Hi all , just looking to buy my first Jag as a weekend / summer car and looking for some advice . I have around £3000 to spend and was looking at a x type petrol or diesel but a friend of mine who thinks he is in the know said " that's not a proper Jag " and suggested i go for a XJ instead . Any views and comments will be taken on board and appreciated . Thanks in advance.

Welcome to JOC, lots of different models to choose from, always liked the XJ, just something about it says luxurious comfort

( with a little something under the bonnet!) but each to their own, it depends on what's on your tick list? Sporty? Pace? Looks?

You will see I own an S Type, which I'm more than happy with (my first Jag) I didn't choose it, she chose me!

I would suggest you take a seat, in different models, and perhaps a test drive if possible, you will know which!!

Thank's for the reply Steve . So much to choose from but looking for comfort overall . Maybe a slightly older xj as i like the older cars . I'm a big 70s / 80s classic car fan . but the prices are through the roof on a lot of models. Anyway i have made my mind up to try a Jag , just deciding which one .

Welcome to the club, Andrew.

Whoever said that the x type is not "a proper Jaguar" has obviously never driven one.  Sure, there are bits that were not made by Jaguar, but you would not call a Rolls Royce "not a proper Roller" because it had a Buick engine - which it did till BMW/VW took the company over.

 

The XJ, with the 2.7 Diesel engine [made as a joint venture between Ford and Peugeot] is a fine engine and no-one would call that "not a proper Jaguar".  Both great cars.

Steve has pointed you in the right direction, and I hope you let us know how you get on.

Thanks Peter . I do like the X Type , but the amount i have seen advertised with the engine management light on has got me thinking . I don't mean one or two i have seen at least a dozen . Is this a common thing that you know of ?

That has to be an XJ or XJS then I would think? But may need some work?

The guys on the forum will have much better knowledg than me. I recently looked at an XJS, starting price was £500 but needed lots and lots of work. Again it depends on what you're prepared to do? If you just want to stick the key in the ignition and drive away, then you will have to look around I think for your budget, in that age bracket.

Hi Andrew,

Most modern cars have loads of electrical sensors and if something quite minor needs attention the EML comes on.  Getting a diagnostic tool such as an OBD2 side scanner [ £20 off eBay] will tell you the code, a quick google will tell you what it means, and another quick request to the club members will tell you the solution.

My son has just bought an X Type Sport estate 2.0D with 91k on the clock on an 06 plate for £3,250, so I am sure you will find one within your budget.

Hi Andrew and welcome,

Ive had a couple of X types plus German company cars, my present X is the 2.5 V6 AWD SE, in all honesty, the X type is probably the best car I've had, very reliable, comfortable and goes well when you give it a tickle, I felt at home the first time I got in one.

as the guys have said, have a look at all types of Jag and see what fits you best.

Basically will be a weekend car and will only be doing 2-3000 miles a year . My friend is a mechanic and does barrow jobs at weekends at a very reasonable price . I have always liked older cars as they seem to have a bit more character . There is a 1995 XJ6 3.2 for sale about twenty minutes away from me with only 63000 on the clock , full service history , 4 good tyres , 12 months MOT , 4 owners in silver/blue looks very well looked after . I'm hoping to get to see it over the weekend . It's from a garage and is up for £1995 . Thanks for the advice Jim , much appreciated .

It's looking promising Jim . They are a very well established Peugeot dealer with a good reputation so must have had it in as a trade in . As a reputable dealer i can't see them selling any rubbish . If it was rough i think it would have gone straight to auction .
