Mot Failure

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just had bad news car badly failed MOT cost 2k to put right.

failure says - Sub frame heavily corroded seriously weakened off side rear. Car heavily under sealed.

Can any one tell me is this a fair price?

I may be able to get some one, who is a mechanic, to weld it but need to speak to him.

Do you think that it can be welded and repaired or do sub frames need replacing?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Julie.

Hi Julie,

I have seen sub frames replaced on a mini a long time ago,  but never on a Jaguar s type.

It would be worth checking on the price of a sub frame.  The David Manners Group has a good catalogue online.  If you can find at the cost for one it will give you can idea towards the cost of the job.

I will have a look around to see if I can locate one.

If there are any members with welding experience, I hope they see this topic.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter,

Thank you.

I will check out David Manners now.

I remember my Father saying back in the 70`s Minis did have a problem with sub frames, it was something they suffered from.

Kind Regards,

Julie.

Hi Jim,

Great thank you will have a look at the link now, just sent off email to David Manners.

Hope I can get old Aubrey fixed soon.

Thanks,

Julie.

hi Julie

these sub frames are readily available second hand

and can be found in very good condition

if your going to have one fitted labor going to be the same and using a second hand one could save you a fortune

its worth considering, its going to be a genuine part, so it will fit

sub frame should not be welded really, its structural and all the suspension hangs off it

rear is not really a big job to change, for a garage

you would have to have a phone round

here's a example of  rear sub frame prices £65 delivered compared to over £700 new

it all depends whats out there, its worth ringing around

cheers

Hi Jo,

Thanks for that. Had one quote back from 1 st choice parts for £288.

Awaiting a few more.

Is it an easy job a keen DIY but quite good mechanic?

Kind Regards,

Julie.

Hi Julie

A keen diy mechanic could do this job,

theres a fair bit of work, but as long has they have a descent set of axle stands to support the body and a pair of trolley jacks, and half descent tool kit, they should manage

obviously a car ramp would make life more easier

but once the basics are disconnected like propshaft from diff, bottom of shockers, brake calipers unbolted, pipes unclipped and supported, abs sensors unplugged, rear exhaust removed

the whole subframe can be lowered complete and pulled out of the way and the all parts swapped over onto new subframe

I would say a garage would do this in half a day and allow a full days work for a good diy mechanic as long as you dont get any complications, like a stubborn bolt on a suspension arms

if you get quotes, get them email pics of the item so you can see condition of the subframe, any descent breaker or parts suppliers will do this

cheers

Joe

Hi,

Just been to see a chap I worked with he owns a garage, been on holiday so just caught up with him.

He said buy the frame and he can do it for £100 if all the bits are supplied.

£250 if he needs to take everything off and re fit them.

Bit better than £2000 I was quoted by MOT garage!
