Hi Can anyone inform me of what grade of Oil is needed for a XF 208 automatic differential as my local jaguar dealer say they do not know as it just comes in a bottle with a number on it. They were not very forthcoming about anything.

Not very helpful then Nev. Peter has suggested a good source however, if not of any assistance try the Castrol website

It would appear the XF is a sealed life transmission fluid however, that would go against my principles. Comma would have the answer to which grade for you.

Thanks to all of you who came back so quickly it has been a help and will pass it on to the garage.

Thanks once again.

Hi Neville

I think the diff on the xf is similar to the diff on the S-type R

That says sealed for life that has Oil spec M2C192A 75W90 theres just over a litre in there

Oil cost me about £25 for good quality Castrol Oil

only problem is there is no drain plug, I assume the "sealed for life" nonsense

I used a oil extraction pump and sucked it out of the fill/level plug, only took an hour all in to do the job, start to finish

so should not cost you much at a garage, would only take 30 mins to replace with the use of a ramp

thanks

Thanks Joe, I appreciate this information and I have printed it out and put it in my file for future reference. My garage who repaired a very noisy diff got onto Castrol who advised them what Oil to use and put it in. As you say it is a sealed unit but they were able to do it all for a fraction of the price Jaguar would have charged and now it is as very quiet and that annoying grown is no longer there so it is a pleasurable to drive.

Thank you for your advice once again as I will pass your information onto the garage incase they have another to repair.

Regards Neville.

Hi Neville

The the rear diff on mine only holds 1.25L and gets some serious abuse, due to the power that goes through it and the weight of the car

I'm going to change the Oil in it every couple of years, due to cost being low ands its so easy to do

this is the Oil i used

That sounds a good idea Joe and something I will get checked out on mine although I only do about 4K a year, however I do tow a caravan with it so what you say does sound sensible.

Thanks once again Joe.
