Badge Removal

Hi all,

I recently decided to remove the leaping jaguar badge from the rear of my car as it looked quite tatty and the sticky foam had started to peel away. I've since discovered that one of the previous owners decided it would be a good idea to secure this by gluing it (!) down. I'd be happy to take suggestions on what you think would be best to get rid of the glue residue as I've tried white spirit and cellulose thinners both to no avail.

However, the reason for my post is I'm looking to see what people's opinion is on removing the "X-Type" and "2.2D" badges as well. I think the car looks better without the leaping jaguar badge but I'm curious to see what people think about this practice and whether they've done it to their own car or not.

Hi Bryan,

You have tried the obvious method of removing glue, and I think that there could be another possibility by trying out a very mild abrasive, such as T Cut, Brasso or toothpaste.  If you follow that method you will have to test it first by finding an area not normally seen --- inside the boot or in the engine bay.

A very "weak" wet and dry might also do the trick.

Personally, I would be inclined to leave on the model badge etc

Like Peter, I've never quite understood why people choose to remove make and model badges, I know they're purely superficial but are nonetheless meaningful ... surely?

Hi Guys, the X Type never had a factory fitted Leaper Badge so I think it must have been an addition by the previous owner, to remove sticky badge residue I have normally started by heating it slightly with a hair dryer and gently picking/peeling it off, followed by using T-Cut.

Personally I wouldn't remove badges that were meant to be there unless they needed replacing with like for like, but in the past I have had new cars that came with the boot badges etc in the glove box giving the owner the choice of having them on or not - I put them on!

Since posting I haven't tried to remove the residue yet but I think I'll try heating it up and using T-Cut and take it from there.

I wouldn't normally want to remove the badges, it's not something I've done with previous cars and hadn't originally intended on doing it. However, the leaping  jaguar on my car looked really worn and had started to come off the car as if someone previously tried to remove it and gave up. I took it off because it made the rest of the car look tatty and I think it does look better without it now.

I figured since it looked better without the first badge then maybe it could look good (neater, maybe) without the rest but I've since changed my mind. I'll sort the sticky residue and leave the rest as is!
