Hi Boys and Girls,

What a great site this is. Just discovered it and you seem like a real friendly crowd. Don't yet own a Jaguar but hope to put that right within the next week. Probably go for an X Type 2008 model. Got my eye on a couple and hope to take a look at them in the next couple of days.

One is a 2.2 D Auto Sovereign on an 08 plate. FSH and comes with 12mths warranty. 12 mths AA cover. Full service and MOT. Downside - 113,000 on the clock. High mileage diesels have never really bothered me (once owned a Citroen XM with 174,000 on it and it was sweet as a nut. Also drove another XM with a staggering 304,000 on it and you would never have known).

However, would appreciate your thoughts on high mileage X Type's. But all things considered, by this time next week I'll hopefully own my first Jag. Can't wait.

Welcome to the club, Stephen.

That sound like a nice car.  On the downside as you say, is 113,000 miles on the clock.  Being pragmatic, however, and a nitpicker by profession, I am inclined to look at how the car has been used, and if it has been the daily drive and back to work, plus general usage,  271 miles as week is not a big mileage, and the 2.2 litre engine is an up to date engine still being used by Jaguar.

Look at the condition of the car --  it is a top of the range model and if it is nice and clean, no damage to the upholstery etc, and the price is right you should be OK.

There is also a free App called Vehicle Smart which will also gove you its MOT Hjistory which is well worth looking at.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Peter.

Cheers Peter,

I'm off to look at the car this afternoon. Asking price is £4,995? Not sure if that is a fair price for a car with this kind of mileage, but it is a top spec.

Let you know how I get on when I return home.

Hi Stephen,

A good spec is quite important.  My S Type SE has Over £11,000 worth of optional extras, even including a "proper" spare wheel.

If there is anything you can bargain for, try it.  If the carpets are worn, try for a new set.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi again Peter,

Well I went to see the car and to be honest, I really couldn't see anything that I could haggle about. The interior is in very good condition although the leather would benefit from a little feeding. There was the odd minor scuff, but nothing you wouldn't expect to see on a 9yr old car. I was surprised to find the drivers seat still firm considering someone's backside had been sat in it for 113,000 miles. The boot lining was very clean, too.

Outside there was one small fingernail size dent near to the rear door handle. The paint wasn't cracked though. No other signs of paint work damage including stone chips to the bonnet.

Out on the test drive, including some motorway, it picked up its feet and I could barely notice the gears changing up/down. No lag when pulling out from junctions. Breaks were good. Ride smooth although slightly firmer than I expected. One bad point was that the cruise control didn't work, but the dealer said that it would be sorted before the car goes out. So no worries there.

All told it seems to be a great car. I loved the colour, too. Sort of a dark grey, but with a distinct purple tinge to it. Didn't commit to buying it there and then and no pressure put on me to do so either, but going to call the dealer tomorrow and tell him to get it ready.

Hi Stephen,

The car sounds rather good, and a bit of TLC with the leather will soon bring it up to a pristine condition.  I give the leather in my s type a good feed and polish every couple of months.

The cruise control on Jaguar is a good system, although I rarely use it myself, living in a major conurbation like the West Midlands.  But it is nice to have on a long run.

Put a couple of pictures f your car on when you get it.

Regards,

Peter.

P.S.  Where are you located?

Hi Peter, thanks for your replies, and to answer your question, I'm from Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Now, here's another possibility. 2008 2.2 X Type SE Auto in black. 89,000 on the clock, 2 owners. AA inspection report. Complete main/independent recorded service every 12,000ml. 6 mth warranty. MOT Oct 2017.

This is advertised at £5,750. Quick call to the dealer and got him down to £5,300. Obviously £300 dearer than the one I drove yesterday, but almost 25,000 less on the clock with an impeccable service history. Got to be worth it? Anyway, I'm off to view it this weekend.

However, my thoughts have been wandering in the direction of an S Type as an alternative. Oh the dilemma. Thoughts of your own as an S Type owner would be welcome.

Regards.
Steve.

Hi Stephen,

I used to own an X Type 2.5 SE AWD which was a very nice car, and I would probably still have it but for the fact that I was carjacked on my own drive.  I would not discourage anyone from buying an X Type.

However, the s type is a step up, as it were, roomier and also a great roadholder.  I have my 2,7 D SE for  nearly  4 years, and other than tyres and servicing I ave only to have a small leak from the water pump which only cost £150 fitted.  A bit roomier but with a smaller boot than the X Type and it is one on the last to be made.

I find it a great car, and when I bought it I made sure that it has all the bells and whistles.  Have a test drive and see for yourself.  The 3 ,0 ;litre  petrol is also a very good car.

Regards,
peter.

Hi Peter,

Been doing more reading up on the S Type, and too be honest it's probably more car than I need if that makes any sense. Other factors I have to consider when compared to the X Type are tax, insurance and mpg. The restricted rear leg room isn't an issue as I'll never sit there - ha ha. No, actually I rarely if ever have back-seat passengers. And on a purely personal level, I prefer the front end look of the X Type.

If the black one I mentioned is as good as it sounds, then I'll probably give it a new home. I'll let you know and post some pictures when I get it.

Cheers.
