Has anyone any experience of removing the EGR valve on a 2008 X Type 2.2 Diesel and does it improve performance any help appreciated also has anyone managed to get this model chipped


Hi Dave,

I have heard that some people have blanked them off, and some say it has made no difference and some say it has slightly improved performance.

The EGR valve is supposed to reduce emissions and I would be inclined to keep it clean by use of an additive rather than take the chance that an emission test might cause an MOT fail.

Thanks for your reply I have just had a new exhaust manifold,Turbio and accuator fitted and at the same time had a new EGR and a new Mass Inlet Valve so intend just to keep the whole lot cleaned on a regular basis I am getting around 54mpg on a steady run of 250 miles at average 75mph and around 35 to 38 round town which I think is good

I was having EGR problems for a couple of years, and managed to keep them clean with a spray.  But in the last 18 months I have been using a  Millers additive which keeps the EGR valves [two on the s type] and injectors clean and I think it assists the DPF to keep clean also.

Hi Dave

We had a word with our Jaguar technician (who does the servicing etc on our 2.7D Twin turbo S-type, as well as our XK X150 and XJ8)....he says that removing or blanking the EGR on the X (or any motor, for that matter) is not recommended, not least because it could cause a MOT fail plus it makes the DPF work harder.

Also, he is not keen on additives as they have been known to cause other problems on occasion.   We have had our '07 2.7D S-type for 18 months now, starting at a mileage of 53K; it now shows 71K.    We did have a DPF full warning coming up in the first couple of months of our ownership; 1 of the 2 EGR valves was found to be gummed up and so was replaced.    Since then we have switched to premium fuel (e.g. Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate) and had no further problems, even with extended short local use from time to time.   The topic of additives has been covered in some depth here on the forum and opinions are very divided.   Each to his own, but we have achieved the desired result without.

Further, removal of EGR counts as a modification in the eyes of some (maybe not all) insurance companies, whilst rechipping most certainly does.    Just a note of caution!

A friend of my other half (MOH) had a similar model X to yours up to a couple of years ago and produced similar mpg figures, so you are certainly in the right range.   Our Jag technician said that the figures you quoted are about what should be expected.   Likewise, he (MOH's friend) never used additive, never had DPF warnings and continues in the same vein with his diesel XF.

you can remove them and blank them, but you get no benefits

also you have to leave the egr there and plugged in, otherwise you get lots of engine management faults

best option is to get them cleaned and leave them there as there usually not much trouble, if you get lots of trouble with them its usually other issues like, burning engine oil, will coke them up and give problems

And my cousin has been using in his peugeot diesel for 2 years and had no problems with that.

I blanked off the egr valve on my AHU engined Golf TDi as the inlet manifold was so clogged that the ports were more than halfway blocked. After cleaning it out I had much more power at high revs.

  • 2 years later...

I have had a dpf trouble and fitted a new one and the warning light still keeps coming on red any suggestions.
