I'm trying to remove and clean the ERG valve on my 2000 Jag. I've looked at loads of information for the last few weeks and crawled all over this engine looking for the valve or even the system itself. I'm not a mechanic but I've always fixed my own. I cannot find this valve and the only information I can find is taking off the intake manifold which is ok. But I've tried to locate the valve before starting this project to avoid meaningless work.

Even if I were to remove the intake I don't see where it would be. Am I not looking for the right parts? Could the system have been bypassed a long time ago? Or can you please guide me to more thorough information? Or should I just winging it and take off the intake manifold? Thanks in advance if you can help.

Hi John --- Are You really sure you want to dismantle and perhaps course more problems ??? there are some really good  EGR  valve cleaners on the market these days that and I think I would try one of those first ???  But of course its up to you ???  ----Frank

I will definitely take the manifold off if there is is chance I can fix hpw it's running,, no problem.. I really didn't think there would be anything effective enough to clean that little system without actually taking the valve off. But I'll definitely look into it right now. Any suggestions?

My worry is taking this manifold off and the part I want to fix not be there. I'm comfortable with mechanics if maybe your concern is I could break something else while preforming surgery? I'm always worried but that's with every operation lol By all means, if I can fix this without a full day of work that'd be great.

That emmissions system has the Jag in a rough idle and random misfires. You can definitely smell the problem in the exhaust fumes.

Thanks for your time!

With the way the carbon is built up within the valve I don't think there is any other solution besides manually cleaning the part.  I think I'm going to take the intake off tonight, see what I can find.

John

You have me a little confused. On one hand you say you cannot find the EGR vale and then you say "with the way the carbon is built up etc etc". If you cannot locate the EGR valve how do you know there is a carbon build up." Good luck with removing the inlet manifold, it is not an easy and straight forward job in my opinion.

Whilst you have the intake manifold off you might consider changing other items that are then accessible and may be leading to "rough idle and misfires."

Please update when you have sorted the problem.

Good luck and Best Wishes, Regards, John

Well we definitely don't know for sure what the problem is, it's speculation. I'm just hopeful. Sorry for the confusion.

I have received codes for

P0400 - Exhaust gas recirculation flow

P0403 EGR control circuit

Can't remember code for random misfires.

It has a rough idle in park and drive. It struggles more in lower RPM.

It's not the MAP.

It's been driven, sat for years, driven hard, sat for years, parts have been replaced the last few years. From the reading I've done and tests and the "what if it's this", I've brought it down to the ERG being clogged with carbon. Really seems like the ERG system isn't working correctly. That's the best I have left I'll definitely let you guys know how it goes.
