What MPG from a 2.7D

Good morning, Stan.

A lot depends on the type on road and the traffic movements.

The last tank of diesel I had gave mer just over 42mpg with average style driving, with one 180 mile round trip mostly on the M6 and one 200 miles round trip mostly on the M1, and 40 odd miles local driving.

Driving the 190 miles to Weymouth last summer I got 47.1 mpg on a quiet M5 but coming back on the same route I only got 36.7 mpg on a busy M5 with the odd queue and speed restrictions for long periods.

And that is with a similar car to yours, slightly younger though.

Regards,

Peter.

Engine size does not always have a relationship with fuel consumption.  I had company cars through the 70's, 80, and 90's, with Ford Escorts 1.3 averaging around 30 mpg, Austin Montegos 1.6 averaging about 35, and a Rover 418 D averaging similar and a Rover 420D averaging just over 40 mpg.

Nowadays a modern 5 litre engine pulling an XJ will get almost the same as a Ford Escort of the 70's.

Engines have really improved the consumption since the price of Oil went up.

I know what what you mean Stan,

I've got a 2013 A4 TDI as company car (we don't get a choice) and the Jag is like a comfort blanket by comparison.

Joys of working for a German company I'm afraid.

I took the Jag to head office in Hameln a few weeks ago, cost a fortune in petrol but it was worth it for the look on my German bosses face as we hit 150 in near silence on the E20  :D

Mine has suddenly dropped to about 26mpg on  local runs, the car runs fine and I have not noticed excessive smoke or loss of performance while motoring normally.

Since I'v owned the car if I do a lot of slow driving (3 weeks or more sometimes) then floor it I get a burst of black smoke, seems to clean out the pipes, from then on its runs and accelerates normal.

I was thinking of changing the air filters, any advice fitting or where to buy

That mpg seems a bit high, Stan but on the other hand, if you have not done any long runs it could not be too high.

Air filters can be bought of Amazon or eBay, but Rimmer Bros will supply genuine jaguar filters for around a tenner.  They are well recommended too.

Peter.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi, I've had my 41,990 miler for 4 weeks it's returning an average of 39.3 mpg on my 100 mile a day commute on A roads stuck at 50mph in single lane traffic, which is good for such luxurious trips to work. It was sitting at 35 mpg until I changed a filthy air filter and started putting a drop of 2 stroke in at refills. It's all smoother and no puff of black smoke on accel (my range rover sport tdv6 benefitted for 2 years when I had that as Commuter limo.

Welcome to the Club, Paul.

The Jaguar experience is a good one, isn't it?

I am treating my car to a Terraclean on the 23rd May [£114 inc vat].

Others who have had the decoke done, because that is basically what it is, give good reports.

Regards,

Peter.
