S Type 3.0 Sport

Featured Replies

Acquired  this motor a few weeks ago, and it drives superbly well when warmed up. Until then I'm experiencing a grumbling/rubbing type noise (non metallic) from the rear in 4th and also slight surging in the same gear.

Exactly as described in TSB S307-11, as far as I am aware this is fixable with a reprogramming of the TCM as described in the TSB. But....is it really possible that an 03 plated car has survived for this length of time without that being sorted previously?

Or...is it more likely the torque converter is ready to give up?post-528-0-24063600-1402489447_thumb.jpg

If anyones wondering what the eck i'm on about, he's the excert from the Jaguar Technical Service Bulletin

TSB S307-11

Growling Noise In 4th Gear During Warmup – V6 Engines - ZF6HP26 Transmission – Reconfigure TCM - 2003 MY-ON S-TYPE 3.0L

Some 2003 MY-ON 3.0L S-TYPE vehicles may experience a growling noise during warmup when the vehicle is in 4th gear. This noise is caused by the torque converter. The TCM can be reprogrammed to solve this concern.

Just a note on some follow up info I have gained on this issue over the weekend. Having spoken to my local independent Jaguar specialist (Andy), he states that this issue solely affects the 3.0L models and in 99.9% of cases a reprogram of the Transmission Control Module cures this irritant. The work costs £65 + vat.

Hi Kevin,

That is not a bad price.

The overall issues of out of date software is something that the main dealers make a lot of money from.

Peter.

I thought it very reasonable too Peter, hence booking it in for our summer shut down in August.

Andy also mentioned that it is the torque converter making the noise but it is not detrimental to the running of the car.

Interesting,

No noises but my 4.2 also surges a little until warm, I was going to invest in the firmware upgrade to see if that sorted it but it sounds like it won't help.

I had the 'box serviced recently and it's slightly smoother etc but no difference to the surging.

You might have already seen this Mike, but have a look here. http://the lurch.com/tsbs.htm

It does mention a surging reported on a 4.2, TBS S307-14.

Don't think I did the link right Mike, this is the website www.thelurch.com just follow the link on the right hand side to 'ZF Gearbox Lurch'

Thanks Kevin,

I've just read TSB S307-14 and it describes exactly the symptoms I get.

Now all I have to do is find somewhere other than the stealership to do the work.

Cheers,

Mike

No problem Mike.

Hi, i had the lurch on my car and i sorted it myself using a laptop, mongoose and software.

On first use i used it to sort out my airbag warning lights, then took a deap breath and flashed the gearbox software, this appears to have sorted my gearbox lurch. This was last October.

I was also able to reset all the codes logged.

I was sceptical at first but i was not prepared to pay the dealer costs,my choice and i am pleased with the result.

Graham :D

Hi Graham,

Even the stealership might be cheaper than buying a laptop and getting the Jag through the front door to my desktop is a right bugger!

Blimey Graham, shame you're so far away, I'd have dropped round this weekend!! :D

I have found it much cheaper than the stealers.Laptop cost me £40,software and mongoose £45,i can also use it as many times as i like, will not cost me anymore money for diagnostics at least..well hopefully. :D

Hi Mike,

Blimey your house must be small,i have 13 Jags in my office!

Laptops are cheap as chips, remember these cars are old technology. :D

Graham, excuse my ignorance but what is a Mongoose (apart from the small African snake killing mammal) and where would one procure such equipment/software?

Kevin,

Mongoose is the name of the cable that connects into your laptop and in to the diagnostice socket in the car. There are various sources to purchase the mongoose cable and it usually comes with the appropiate software for your vehicle.

Like all technology these days clones of the manufacturers equipment are available on auction sites, websites etc.

There are lots of options available, like all things nowadays you just choose what is suitable for you.

My particular S-type is a 2004 so i went for the cloned mongoose cable, with version 1.30 of the software, this has worked successfully for me.....eventually.

Like all things to do with technology, its not always straight forward and can be frustrating to set up,but once sorted i feel in my opinion it will save me money in diagnosing any problems that arise.

Generally speaking the software will only run on a Windows version of XP,on a dedicated laptop, this is because the software was written when xp was the available operating system at the time. You can also purchase the reccommended laptop that Jaguar used for the diagnostics at the time and load the system onto it.

I chose to buy a secondhand laptop as all i have on it is the Jaguar S-Type Diagnostics. If you go down this route make sure the laptop has at least 1.2gb of Ram as any less and i have found that the software fails to load.

Hope this explains what and how i have gone, any questions i will try to help.

Graham :D

Graham,

Is this the software you are on about ?

IDS SDD Land Rover/Jaguar v138.02

(The program for the dealer level diagnostics of cars Land rover / Jaguar with drawstring VCM.)

ABT,

Trevor

Interestingly, Graham, on 5th Gear this morning, one of the presenters said that there are more computers on a modern car than on the Space Shuttle.

Peter

Peter,

yes very interesting,i do wonder if all the technology on todays cars is neccessary....but thats just my opinion.

I must admit i am looking at another v12 Vanden Plas.....Graham :D

totally agree, one of the best things about the internet is that there is so much information about from just about anywhere, just a little time taken to search and you can save lots of £££££'s.

Graham :D

Graham,

Tried to sell the wife on Ebay, but no luck, so the internet doesn't always work!
