  1. Alternator hmmm the symptons might go along with that although, should I have had some sort of alarm telling me of such? I only say that because the XF is supposed to have all lights and bells. In laymans terms I want to be knowing if those bushes in the alternator are wearing down lol! A far cry from my old ford Granada where I could see a red light warning me there was no charging! Anyhow, some good news - While my battery has been on charge today, I put the cars original (suspect) battery back on and it started! I daren't go anywhere though. I am taking the new battery back to where I bought it to check if it has a fault. Regards Graham
  2. Well, in daylight I could immediately see the plastic cover which popped off easily with the key from the fob. The key turned easily and the boot popped open hurray! Now, the interesting bit. I removed the battery and put it on charge in my workshop. I'm not convinced it is flat but I will give it a few hours! Lets hope it starts ok later!
  3. Thanks for the quick reply Steve. I have google searched and did see similar to your reply albeit from our American friends (which should be correct as they are British cars)! I will have a look around the boot lid near the VIN plate. I can now imagine it might have either a plastic cover or maybe a rubber to hide the key hole. Once in, I can start the investigations proper! If that was my alarm sounding last night, I should be concerned a/ that I was to idle to even check my car (I though it was next doors kids again)! b/ just how long would/could it have sounded for before running flat? c/Did my front neighbours hear it, I hope not?!!! d/Dig my battery guarantee/receipt out of the file! I will let you know in due course of course. Regards Graham
  4. Hi, I cannot gain entry to the boot and the battery is flat! Today, I tried to get in the car but the key fob and also the spare one failed to get me in. Out came the handbook and I managed to open the front nearside door using the pull out key from the fob. Then I tried the boot switch but it does not open. Not a shimmer from any lamps inside although I did hear a faint blip blip when turning the key to lock the door again. This only did it a couple of times so I guess it could be in alarm state that has run the battery flat? Obviously, I can open all doors from the inside now that I am in but how do I get in the boot where the battery is? I tried the centre armrest in the rear. I don't think there is access from there. Cheers Graham Footnote; On reflexion - It is highly likely that the alarm was sounding at teatime last night. We never checked the car as it sounded like from the rear of the house! Only just considered this so will need to check in daylight for any suspicious marks or damage. The main thing here though is I that the battery is just under a year old and was in good condition until now!
  5. Try removing 12v car battery leads and put back on. Probably will reset the computer!
  6. I cut & paste this from the above post - *** The Diesel Particulate Filter is in the exhaust system of all diesel-powered cars sold new since 2009.*** I note that Old Peter (Hi Peter), car is a 2007 however. I don't have any knowledge of and am not gesting either so am simply asking, did Jaguar introduce DPF filter before mentioned in the above article i.e. year 2009? If not could it be that the warning light hasn't come on because there isn't one fitted? That would be a good reason not to come on!
  7. As I don't do a lot of miles I probably would benefit from a trickle charger Joe. In fact, I will look into it how/where the inlet could go right away. Cheers
  8. 2011 XF 3.0D Premium Luxury - December last, I attempted to start the car but there was no response to pressing the start button. A light on the instrument panel (I think red) advised me that the battery was flat. As I had owned the car for a couple of years and wasn't sure how old the battery was, I bought a new one and plonked the old on my garage bench. A couple of weeks ago, I had the exact same fault light show and engine not turning over. I was suspicious that my battery wasn't dead (we are in May so temperature is well up)! I took off the battery and replaced it with the original one from my garage bench which had been charged once in those 5 months. Started straight away and has continued every day since! The only thing that I did was to rub the terminal leads with fine grade wire wool as there was a very slight build up of lead sulphate or corrosion (not at all excessive I must add). However, cleaning the terminals may have helped the flow of current to the sensitive electrical system on my XF. Hopefully I will be fine now but I am a bit disappointed that back in December last year, I never thought to check for any build up of lead sulphate before fitting new battery. If I had wiped any build up from the battery leads at the time, I might not have had to buy a new battery! Or could this be something else? Any known faults? Has anyone else done what I did and bought a new battery just because you thought yours was dead? This phenomenon has made me think, how do we know when a battery is actually beyond use? The guy in the battery store tested the battery and (no surprise as it was flat) told me it was dead probably a bad cell! Well I know the present temperature will make a huge difference to starting so bad cell or not that battery is holding charge and again back on the car. I intend keeping it on until at least the autumn when I will ask for another test for "dead cells"!
  9. Only going on a previous post about something else that I read, which is pretty much as you state - Jaguar turn this off during build so you cannot fit after market items. I bet it can be turned on if only someone knew how to do it. The dealership sound like they are being honest/cautious rather than fobbing you off. I am thinking outside of the box here but if you really want to fit an after market one can you give it it's own power supply and don't even bother with the management system? I may get shot down for this which I take on the chin. I realise that power supply would need a source of charging by the way! Regards Graham
  10. I came across the following link which might be useful for someone? https://auction.catawiki.com/kavels/10946321-classic-jaguar-set-of-handbooks-and-brochures?family=classic-cars
  11. I found a matching code - - - eBay item number 301577118923 were somebody is selling an X type nearside front door card trim with SEM code!
  12. Loved every bit of it. Thanks for posting!
  13. £132 per year - - - and including international breakdown cover? Classic Car owners are onto a good thing here!
  14. Oh and my one is pre-facelift model. Good job because I don't like the stop start on the facelift, nor the 8 speed box!
  15. I did manage to solve this annoyance and was pleased to find that it was indeed the trip setting as Lukexfs states above! I have a theory how the settings might have changed in the first place - - - around the time I had a new battery (just before Christmas) I believe I first noticed this. Might it have somehow been that the power shut down when taking off the battery leads might have corrupted the re-start procedure to default to "Auto" instead of trip "A" or trip "B"? Anyhow its good again now. I did in fact find this myself prior to my mot but I will still credit Lukexfs for also finding the culprit. Well done Luke!
  16. I was told by Jaguar dealership before I purchased my 3.0l diesel (what was then high mileage at 108,000), that the cambelts where due at 112,000 or 10 Years. As soon as I bought the car I had cambelts changed at same time as a major service. I also have a 2.5Tdi Shogun sport which I bought from new (2007) and has only done 60,000 miles. On that car I insisted on having cambelt changed some 3 years or more ago just to feel safe! Having read tales of unfortunate souls whom failed to have the cambelt changed and their engines blown up (literally apparently), I choose to have that rubber replaced! The posts above describing any perishing of rubber is spot on by the way. It isn't necessarily down to mileage, one close look when engine casing opened up should be enough for any one of us to dig deep and get it changed. Quite a lot of work to change the cambelts hence the price though.
  17. I am not sure if my average mileage/average mpg/average speed display has somehow switched to manual mode. That is what it feels like anyhow. When starting the engine, the display reads "auto" and zero mileage/speed/mpg are displayed as I flick through the menu. However, when the stalk button is held for a couple of seconds or more, the message "fetching previous trip settings" or similar is shown and then the previous trip readings are there. This is now annoying me because clearly the computer has the settings stored and can access them. When I turn the engine off it happens all over again! The only thing of note that I can think of to upset the computer is that I had a new battery a couple of months ago (possibly when this fault first started). Any help would be appreciated. Graham
  18. Not exactly to much of a fault although the "average mileage" and "average mpg" which normally displays on the dash keeps "clearing" itself and with what I think is a new reading "auto" appears on the mileage display screen. If I hold the left hand trip stalk button on the wheel for a couple of seconds the words "fetching previous journey" or something like that displays and then that average will display until the engine is turned off. Then it does it all over again! I want to see the entire averages for the journey/s not just the singular which is what it seems to be doing right now. I could try removing the car battery and see if it will reset but has anyone heard of anything similar, as I don't want to tamper if it is a simple fix? Regards Graham
  19. I bought my 2011 3.0 D with 108,000 on the clock but factored in the £750 service cost for the cam belt at Hatfield Jaguar before buying. It will be another 112,000 miles before the cambelt requires changing again (or 10 years) however.
  20. My 3.0 D averages similar to the 2.2 around town but on long motorway runs I have had over 50mpg! Yes this can be achieved if you can resist the urge to drive over the nominal, and a strong wind isn't head on! As you are choosing between the 2.2 and 3.0, they both have ample power. The 2.2 is marginally cheaper for servicing (sometimes, not always). However, I tend to believe that larger engines seem to outlast smaller ones by many miles, probably because they are not usually thrashed!
  21. My 2011 3.0 D doesn't have voice turned on even though the buttons are fitted as standard. As you say, the parameter setting must be isolated and you, like me cannot find this anywhere! Perhaps what I was told at Hatfield Jaguar is true - that you have to purchase Voice from new as it comes as a unique fitting that cannot be added to. That's what they told me anyway! However, seeing as I now know that company don't always say it as it is, I would be interested if you do manage to succeed in turning it on. Regards Graham
  22. Halfords did the hardwire on my Nextbase dashcam. I watched them do it, they ran the wires to the fusebox next to the battery and used piggyback sleeves to tap in to a circuit. Letting them fit instead of Hatfield Jaguar, Hull saved me £150! Works perfectly. Direct Line would not give a discount, perhaps I will try on here next year instead.
  23. Hi Phil, well done on the S type - with only 17,000 miles! That's fantastic and will serve you well. I am not an expert on car mechanics but have always taken an interest. It might be that the computer only has a certain amount of back up battery (built into the circuit) thereby possibly, after a certain time losing memory settings that you would need to reset when you reinstall the battery. If that was just your vehicles personal settings and the time I wouldn't mind removing the battery. However, if this involved settings for fuel flow and other critical vehicle settings I would be cautious. It is for this reason that I think best to wait for someone who has good knowledge rather than relying on my best guess before taking it off! As long as there is indeed no complications as I have just mentioned, If I were to not use my car for a while I would definitely consider bringing the battery indoors to a dry garage or shed etc to trickle charge. The low temperatures of winter reduces a massive amount of power from our batteries (as I found out yesterday when mine suddenly packed up with no prior fault)! I'm not certain but I think I read ages ago that 3 degrees centigrade and less, will drain the battery by 30% (the "less" gradually gets worse. On a sliding scale, I cannot remember but might have been as high as 50% or 60% power loss! Sounds a good idea to install a trickle charge plug somewhere convenient so that you can remove and connect easily every time you use it.
