  1. Hi everyone, having just come back in to Jaguar S Type ownership my first frustrating experience has arisen.

My 2002 model year V8 has a cracked expansion tank and none are available at the moment from anywhere, alledgely due to poor

quality manufacture at JLR.There is no definite date for them to become available.

Since this part is well known you would of thought that by now the quality should be right.

Although my car is not overheating(yet) i feel disappointed that they are not available.

Has anyone had any success in repairing them?

    Thanks everyone.

Looking forward to seeing some details Graham :)

    Apologies for the long post.

Purchased the car last Sunday having looked at it some 3 weeks ago but it didn't grab me at the time and i thought it was expensive.

Had a further look around and realised if i could get it at the right price for me then i would take a chance.

So went back and took it on a test drive for about 15 miles and it performed good enough so i enquired more about it to see if i could try and

    get the price reduced.

I had already checked its MOT History and through out its life no corrosion issues had been flagged up,just the normal suspension issues

that these cars do seem to suffer from.

I found out that the car had not been moved since November 2017 until it went for its MOT at the End of January 2018,then parked up again.

There were some advisories on the MOT for suspension bushes and drop links,it initially failed on the washer pump not working so a new one was

    installed.

Secondly and i know people will shudder at this but the service and handbooks had been lost so initially no history.

So i felt i was in a position to bargain and after a friendly negotiation we agreed on a price if they would deliver it,job done.

    So the car itself:

    29/01/2002 4.0 V8 Dark Blue 86202miles.Electric Sunroof.

So the recommissioning starts slowly, engine fairly clear and not smelly,so i have just started the car and let it run for 20 mins a day to gradually bring her back to life.

Because it had not been used everything needed lubricating and is now starting to work, slowly.

Gearbox changes nicely(will change the oil),Engine appears to run smoothly(no clanking from the tensioner/Chains),a job to be done to upgrade to the latest.

The heating/cooling system wasn't responding to the settings i was doing, just blowing out cold air,and i thought the heater valve had stuck, but luckily

today when starting her up and moving the settings again it has now started to function.

There does not seem to be any  body rot just the normal dings and scratches  and i will attempt to improve this.

Interior has stood up well with no holes or rips in the leather, just a little wear on the drivers bolster.

Over this weekend i hope to get to know the car better and plan my improvements.

    Apologies for the long post.

  3. While out yesterday i started to get the 'Lurch' symptoms as i had experienced on my previous s type, but this time not as bad but i thought i would sort it before it got worse.

So i plugged in my Mongoose and carried the reflash which takes around 30 mins.

I didn't have time to road test and put it through its learning mode only a quick drive around the block.

I hope to give it a road test today.

When carrying out this reset its a bit daunting seeing all the flashing warning lights and your gauges resetting but i knew what to expect this time.

I am still disappointed with jaguar on such a major component that this problem occurs.

    Graham

  4. Hi,

if you will be removing the manifold it might be worth changing all the plugs their and testing the coils as i think this is a time consuming job and would be worth carrying out all the maintenance so that it does not need removing again.

If it was me then i would replace the battery first, reset the fault codes and take it from there.

Are you able to reset the fault codes with the code reader yoy have.

I am not completely sure but you may possibly need the Jaguar Software to do this.

But as always try the less expensive route first.......hope it works out for you.

  5. Paul,

i suppose if everything isworking ok then maybe leave things as they are.

Before i did any updates on mine i had a look through all the menus before actioning anything just to get a feel for what it could do.

It was interesting to see the previous alerts etc.

When i was feeling brave i took the plunge and it worked for me,i understood the risks.

  6. Thanks Graham.

There is a lot of hype about the clones not being able to do anything other than read. I had wondered whether that was true or not. Clearly, it isn't. I have a clone Mongoose and, like you, I'm somewhat nervous of using it.

Do you need to be connected to internet when using it please?

Any tips please? (Apology to OP for hijack.).

    Paul,

i would suggest not connecting to the internet.

There are lots of posts on may forums with regards to using the software.

You may be lucky and it works first time but it took me and my techie friend a couple of months to sort out problems with a load file,tabman.exe.It turned out that we did not have enough RAM on the laptop we were using,it needs to be at 1.2gb as a minimum.

Mine works on a stand alone laptop with only xp pro running, nothing else or the software will not function,in my experience anyway.

It may sound daunting but once working it can be so worthwhile if you just take your time and initially lots of patience will potentially save you lots of money in the long run.

I also reset my airbag warning lights and safety belt modules after a battery discharge.

Just thought you will need to have your laptop connected to the mains power as the gearbox reset takes a good 30 mins, with lots of dashboard flashing lights.

    Hope this helps.

  7. Hi Josh,

you may have had this fixed but i had the same problem on a previous s-type i had.

The amount of times it flashes helps to diagnose what it could be.

Hopefully its a loose connection, mine wasn't and i had to connect mine to my laptop to the car and reset the faulty light via the Jaguar software,as something had caused the module to malfunction.

  9. Hi Graham,

The 2.7 Diesel has cam belts which need changing at 105k.  All the petrol models have cam chains.

You don't get the chance to go quickly on the A5 with all the roadworks.

    Regards,

    Peter.

    Hi Peter,

    thanks for the info.

Yes i can remember when i use to ues the A5 on a Sunday morning in my XJS V12......nice memories.
