Hi Nigel, if you are leaning towards the XKR Convertible, then you may well be restricted for choice at the moment although there could be a few coming to the market in the near future due to the onset of the winter. The current crop on the market are few and far between, but I do know of a few owners who may be looking to dispose of their pristine motors due to age related mobility issues (for the owner!). Normally I would advise interested folks to pull together the specification they are after - colour scheme especially, followed by preferred year. In my opinion the 2010 cars are the sweet spot, with some of the best colour combinations and not outfitted with the slightly superfluous body kits and wheels that are not silver. Once you have an idea of what you would like, and it is a Modern XK, then come back here and let us know. Pretty sure we might be in a position to point you towards some cars that are not necessarily yet on the market. N6 JMX

Hi Anthony, which model of the XK are you referring to when you talk about the "modification"? The X-150 (2006 - 2014) already comes with a central touchscreen for control of all sorts of actions within the car so don't understand what a modification would bring to the party. As for rear subframe corrosion in the X-150, it is not an issue unless the car has been used year round on salted roads, or spent much of its life by the seaside - salty air. My own car is a 2010 model and the underside is like new, even though I live in Northeast Scotland (mine for the past 13 years) - because it doesn't get out in the winter and therefore never been subject to salted roads. That said, I have seen very poor condition rear, and front, subframes, where the owners are not aware of the steel underpinnings - they get lost on the aluminium architecture - and forget to have the steel elements protected with Lanogard or similar. When properly protected, or not used, then the subframes remain perfect. N6 JMX

Hi Nigel, the later 5.0 XKs are a fantastic vehicle, they are very well equipped and offer absolutely excellent value for money. However they can suffer from serious rear subframe corrosion. For long distance touring the XKs are in my opinion a better choice of car. Either way both the F Type and XKs are great cars. There is also a modification available for the entire entertainment and heating /cooling controls system for the XKs. It comes in the form of a touch screen that replaces all the existing centre console controls and transforms the car immensely. I have a contact that supplies them in the UK and have seen one working. Amazing transformation that massively improves the ergonomics of the car. It is plug and play and needs no wiring modifications.

Jim and Anthony, thanks so much for getting back to me, that’s been really useful. I now find myself looking at later XKs - is that silly in your opinion ( as you can tell I am a car illiterate but just want something that’s fun to enjoy in the sun on a trip to Italy say)? Cheers and thanks Nigel

I would look into having them remanufactured by a hydraulic fitters company. If you sent the eBay lot to them they could work them over. Since you now have a spare set you should look into it.

[email protected] started following XKR or F-type convertibles?
-
Hi, I have had the pleasure of owning 3 F Types, 2 of which were convertibles and also a 4.2 XKR convertible. Without a doubt the XKR is a much more comfortable car for touring long distance in my opinion, the later 5.0 versions have a high level of specification equal or superior in some cases to the F Type. The boot space in both types of convertible is limited . The XKR being larger, but when the roof is down the space is reduced unlike that of the F Type which does not have a stowable partition in the boot. I also know that some replacement components for the XKRs are no longer available from JLR at all, these include the later XKR models, for instance the rear subframes are no longer manufactured, and some electrical modules are also affected. Maybe a factor worth considering. I do miss the ride quality of the XKR, my wife is not a fan of my FType for this reason. The 5.0 FType is an impressive performer, but a completely different driving experience to the XKR. I would like to own one of each type but don't have the space!!

Hi Nigel, I have the XKR Convertible and it is a great machine. I looked long and hard at the F-type Convertible, but nice as it is, it simply doesn't have the attributes that the XKR has and therefore is a non starter for my personal use of the car. We do like taking the XKR to Italy for a summer vacation and we can pack everything we need for the overnight stops into bags that fit on the rear seats, whilst the long stay requirements are tucked away in the boot. You simply cannot do that in the F-type - no rear seats for a start and probably only 50% of the boot space by comparison, and the XKR boot space is not that great to start with. I am sure folks will be along soon to extol the virtues of the F-type and how they make it work for these long road trips, but the F-type simply doesn't work for me. Let us know how your selection process goes along. N6 JMX

OK, hopefully I am not breaking any rules here (I know the UK government doesn't allow free speech 🙂 ) I am doing various jobs on my newly acquired S Type R and post on my channel JAGVETTE1 please check it out and if you like it please subscribe I do it for fun not profit, I make mistakes and I show them, I am a mechanic with more years of experience than I care to remember, BUT I know you are NEVER too old to learn. Thanks in advance Gary

Hi All, I’m looking for some advice. I have up to £25k to spend and want to buy an auto convertible (with electric roof) and some room in the boot for bags when the roof is down? Preferably with add-ons like parking sensors, sat nav etc. in your opinions would I be better looking for an XKR or an F-type, and any advice along the way? Many thanks Nigel

S Type security back up sounder and immobiliser
plaviator replied to plaviator's topic in Jaguar S-Type Club
The situation has worsened now as if I try to start the car in the morning, it spins over like crazy but won't start. If I then cycle the ignition on and off about 10 times then it will start straight away. My thinking was that perhaps the check valve in the tank fuel pump was leaking back but when I removed the delivery pipe from the pump, it was full and the fuel did not disappear from the outlet stub, indicating no leak-back. In any case, with the ignition on, the pump runs continuously so switching the ignition on/off shouldn't be the cure. This only happened before if I locked the car but now it happens locked or unlocked and depending on the length of time that it has not run determines the number of ignition cycles I have to make. If it is off for an hour then probably only two. I am still leaning towards a faulty immobiliser but would welcome any constructive comments.
