  3. The smell of burning semiconductors is different to that of an alternator or other wound component (eg motor, transformer etc) so that might give you the answer. If you stick your head in the footwell and have a good sniff, you should get your answer - if the BCM has fried, you'll smell it. The alternator windings will be a more accrid smell and most obvious under the bonnet, particularly in the region of the alternator. At this stage, guesswork won't do it, you need a proper diagnosis, hopefully your Jag specialist has autoelectrical training or at least, a working knowledge of electrical systems. Even then they can be tricky to diagnose.

  6. Hi Ross I would still have a look around the mega fuses as a poor connection there could well fit your symptoms (including the burning smell) and I am not convinced a dead alternator would account for non-operational interior lights and hazards... Good luck John

Hi everyone a thanks for the replies, after speaking to a jag specialist where it’s getting delivered too he thinks it’s more than likely the alternator has burned out as it’s now 6 years old and to be fair a week before all this started I had a right smell of burning one day on the way to work I thought it was coming from out side or it was the road water on the hot exhaust. Fingers crossed a new battery and alternator will fix her and it last another 3 years till the cars paid off 🥴
  8. Hi Keith, welcome to the wonderful world of Jaguar motoring - you will enjoy it. From your spelling of "tires", I am guessing you are not in the UK, possibly North America. If so, there is a great community in Jaguar North America and you will find lots of great help and insight on here. One of the first things you'll need to keep a 2004 car running well is a suitable code reader, preferably one that can cater for Jaguar specific codes (DTC). Enjoy. N6 JMX
  9. Spot on John, fuses are an often overloooked source of problems. Going back to the days of "Continental" ceramic (and later, plastic) fuses, they were almost guaranteed to give trouble. Then blade fuses arrived and were much more reliable. However i've had many problems over the years with blade fuses, either the blades corrode causing a problem when they warm up and effectively disconnect the circuit or the fuse holder itself has overheated (usually as a side effect of the fuse corrosion) and melted the fuse holder. This extrapolates to all fuses to a greater or lesser degree so i totally agree with your analysis. The one point against it is that interior lights are a relatively low current draw so will drop less voltage over a resistive joint. As you allude to, it may still be the battery but could also be a poor connection, the lack of any electrical activity points to a general connector which is more likely an earth rather than a fuse if all circuits are down.

I Agree it is unlikely that a Mega fuse has totally failed however they do themselves suffer from corrosion and can be a source of intermittent problems. If the Battery is indeed good, then the most likely issue is around an electrical connector most likely the battery terminals, battery earth (both visible) or the Mega Fuses (less obvious).   11. Hello' My name is Keith. Hoping to learn as much as I can. This is the first Jaguar I've every owned that I will be working on other than general maintenance. The car needed new tires, I'm quickly learning what I don't know about Jaguar. Happy to be here and ready to take in as much as I can about the car. As the title says The car is a 2004 XKR Portfolio. It's a red one. In very good condition but has spent a lot of time sitting with it's last owner. I'm looking forward to driving it.

  15. Hello all, First-time poster, but I have found this forum to be very helpful. After passing my test, I decided to buy a Jaguar X-Type. I love my car. It's a 2006 RHD model, with a 2L manual diesel. It runs great, and I love how comfortable it is. Recently, when browsing this forum, I found a few posts talking about the accessory sockets behind the glovebox and in the boot of the X-types. Having a 12v socket in the glove box of my car appealed to me, so, after doing my research, I tried to embark on installing them. I should mention that I am an electrical engineering student, so I can generally handle electrical matters. After purchasing and installing the R2 Accessory relay in the passenger side fuse box, I was confused as to why there was no voltage between either the black and brown or the black and brown-green wires in the accessory connector. I thought I had maybe tested the wrong cables so I shorted what I thought was the load end of the relay to do a continuity test. It was at this point I realised I had not disconnected the battery, as there was a crack, and the cable I used to short the pins began to smoke! I immediately pulled the cable out and did a visual check of the fuse board and could find nothing wrong, so I turned the ignition, where I found a warning light on my dash, with a note in the message centre saying "CRUISE NOT AVAILABLE". Then I noticed that the fans were not coming on, so I navigated to the climate section of the infotainment screen to find a message there also, saying "communications failure, consult your main dealer". So now I can't use the A/C, heating, Demisters, air recirculation or heated seats. On top of all this, my cigarette lighter socket also no longer works! So I was wondering if anyone knew why it was just these systems that failed? It seems odd for them to fail, as they are seemingly unrelated to each other. No fuses have blown that I have found so far either, adding to the confusion. I'd be grateful if anyone could explain to me what went wrong, and how I could fix it, if it is possible for me to do so?. Thanks, and sorry for the long explaination.
  16. Hi Phil Assuming your purchase date was 1st June 2024 and not 1st June 2014 you need to go straight back to the dealer you bought it from. They are legally bound under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 to provide that "goods delivered or sold must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose". First recourse is to give them the opportunity to sort it out. Regards John

  18. Hi Phil, the first thing required is more information, particularly any stored fault codes that could point to the problem. You have listed your XJ as a 2012 model, therefore an X-351 model, so it should be worthy of a fix, but first we need to know what is causing the limp home mode. N6 JMX
  19. Hi New member here (Phil) bought XJ 1st June 2014 and today (3rd) started going into limpmode can this fault be cured or will it persist from now on. Or, should I take it back to garage for refund. Thanks
  20. You're correct if the car has the correct battery fitted which could in fact be part of the problem. If someone has previously changed the battery and not fitted an AGM battery, the stop-start will hammer the life out of a standard lead-acid and cause excess sulphation, drastically reducing the capacity of the battery. However, if the battery is fully charged and not even the interior or hazard lights will work, it's pointing towards an earthing problem somewhere, rather than fuses. That said, it could be a duff battery and an earthing problem..............
