Im in the U.S. and was wondering if anyone could tell me what I should expect to pay for the latest udates for the trans on a 2000 s type 3.0. Was also thinking of changing the gearbox fluid as well,as I recently bought the car and have no idea when(if) it was done...170k miles. It is really hard to bring out of park, although if I adjust the shifter cable it will shift great for a few days then gradually gets sticky again...stretched cable?...also I have replaced the plastic junk piece in the shifter itself. I always work on my own cars but I'm about to just hand it over to the dealer....any help will be much appreciated...thx

Also best places for parts?

Welcome to the Club, Wes.

You will enjoy the S Type - good looking and a dream to drive.

Jaguar do say that the gearbox is sealed for life but most Jaguar owners seem to indicate that a gearbox oil change at about 75,000 makes a difference.  Gearbox oil is not cheap but doing it yourself will save you some money.

I don't know the best places for parts in the U.S. but I have come across sites in the U.S. when I have been looking for parts dealers in the UK.  Google is a handy tool!

Regards,

Peter.

Peter,

had reason lately to call at my local Jag specialists and he's just estimated me £200-£250 for the gearbox to be serviced and the TCM reprogrammed with the latest release of software.

Its done 124,000 so thinking best get it looked at and something done with it as a precaution.

Hi Kevin,

I bought a late model S type with 48k on the clock, so I hope to stay clear of main dealers for a bit!

124k is not a big mileage for that engine.

Are they doing an oil change on the gearbox?

Peter.

Yes, new oil included in the price. The garage is a God send for Jag owners on a budget.

That is a good price, Kevin.

The oil change comes in a bit expensive and I feel you are not being ripped off.

Peter.

Hi Peter,

yes I believe the oil per litre is quite expensive think he said it was around £20. I'm extremely happy with that price and will be booking it in during an upcoming holiday in around four weeks time.

I'll post my thoughts on any differences I feel, just the TCM update should smooth out the ride a bit,

Hi Kevin,

I have heard of gearbox oil changes alone costing about £275 +  at a main dealer.

When I had a motor cycle [0ver 50 years ago] I used to change the oil every two weeks.  Such are the advances in oil technology some oils [Castrol Magnatec, for instance] are guaranteed for 20k miles.

You have got a very good price.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Kevin,

Sounds like a good deal, I paid £410 for a gearbox service at a local auto box specialist but that did include a new sump and switch cover, both had minor leaks and I think the filters are in the sump.

When I spoke to ZF at Nottingham they recommended servicing every 100,000 km.

I had the firmware upgraded for £70.00 at Nene Jags

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike, did you notice an improvement in operation?

Kevin.

You can afford holidays ! how posh are you ?

ATB,

Trevor

Hi Kevin,

The shift quality is only marginally better, but the "lurch" between 40 and 60 is noticeably improved, not gone but much less evident.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike, its good to hear that you have noticed a difference although on the other hand it doesn't sound as dramatic as I would have hoped because all your issues haven't really disappeared.

Hi Kevin,

To be honest the shift quality was very good to start with so I'm not sure how much better it could get.

The lurch was quite noticeable though and although not completely gone is better.

Cheers,

Mike
