Hi,

My Dad has a '97 XJ6. 6 weeks ago he tried to start it but it wouldn't fire.

It turns over fine and sometimes it will rev up but just conks out. This is what I have tried....

New Starter relays

New Crank Sensor

New Throttle Body

New Throttle Body Sensor Thingy

New ECU

And various attempts at bore washing....

Its getting ridiculous now. We really cannot afford to spend out any more money on guess work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? If not, does anyone know a vehicle breakers who pay more than £150 in Essex?

Please help!!!!

Welcome to the Club, Mark.

I hope someone can assist,  but Kenny is far more knowledgeable than me and I am as mystified as he is.

I am of the generation that checks the the 3 "Ps" --  Plugs, points and Petrol.

Good Luck,

Peter.

Just thinking out loud buddy and something is telling me spark plug coils, never worked on or had a X-Type but I have experienced  a coil pack failure on a 2.4ltr V5 Golf in the past and from what I remember sounds familiar.

buy an OBD II scanner on the Bay and plug it in...being a 97 version II should work....95 and earlier were often OBD I ....There is a lot of info on diagnosing the outputs of an OBD on the web, on many jag forums, even YouTube will show you how to use one....it stands the best chance of throwing up a code to signify what problem(s) you have.....taking out guess work is a matter of being logical, patient, and focusing your research.

However that being said I had a prob that didn't throw a solution code....a simple no start on a 95 XJR that every man and his dog had an opinion for..ECU, this sensor, that sensor, park isolation lateral switch....it wouldn't crank.....park isolation lateral switch was not it but it was at least physically close........ turned out to be the voltage variable rheostat fitted next to the shifter was bent slightly and losing contact as the gear lever moved from park to the gears....no contact = no crank.....stuffed a washer down the side to force it left slightly and fixed

Hi mark

Have you tried putting a new fuel filter on

I had a stype that was like this and it turned out to be fuel filter blocked.

Hope this helps.

Dave

that is a useful post Frank and one I found a good while back when I was trying to solve X300 problems....but no matter how old this thread is now, and hopefully the poster found the cure....the moral of this story is that our cars X300 X308 do not like to be left unused for any length of time which allows these gremlins to creep in and cause electrical terminal corrosion induced by moisture and create a hard to find problem...but these type of problems are inevitable unless you live in the Mohave desert or keep it in a dehumidified warm garage and never use it on cold days
