hi martin, nice motor mate. and cracking wheels. charlie

  • Author

Thankyou Charlie. I thought I would get the worst corroded wheel finished first which took nearly 10hrs of sanding alone. Im quite impressed with the finish overall but its not perfect.

I have also been underneath it this week sorting some of the flaky paint with good old hammerite and waxoil. Worst area was where the rear towing eye screws in.

post-5547-0-00109300-1416685358_thumb.jp

martin. i thought you put them in some wer and got them done. youve done a good job of them. realy good. i knew a guy who had premises on the same inds est that i had my premises, he told me yes they dip them in the acid to strip off the old paint. then cataloy them rub them down then spray them. my old dad always undersealed every car he got. well in those days before alloy bodys they wer prone to rust. i always do the exhausts if their not stainless. ie get can of heat paint and spray them. charlie

Funny yoy say that about acid dipping them. My cousin who owns green end garage in great holland by chance has exactly the same wheels hes refurbing to go on a jag he has for sale.I went there with my dad to see about getting the diesel particulate filters removed from his XF. Anyway he had his dipped and its certainly stripped the paint but has left the whole of the alloys rough and needs a tremendous amount of sanding/filling. I guess being a fairly soft metal the acid has eaten its way into the surface of the alloy. I got one of them wire star attachments for the angle grinder for the second wheel and seems to be a lot easier.

martin. mind and tell your dad by removing the blasted filter the car will fail its MOT test. they wer put into diesel cars for the omissions from the car. thank god the xk is petrol as all diesel cars have them and also get probs from them. charlie

sorry but forgot to add. you have to take the car on a 30-40 min drive once a month and floor it to burn off the particules from that !Removed! filter. sorry about the swear word. thats why i bought petrol as my mate has a busy garage up here. and tells me off these probs from all car co. charlie

Martin, removing the DPF is an automatic MOT failure. I think it is an EU directive that was brought in this year about February.

There is some argument about how successful the DPF is as I know of someone who had it removed and the emissions were better than previously.

I have been given very reliable information that the DPF inspection is a visual one, and will be spotted if the DPF is replaced by a straight through pipe.  However, if the DPF is removed, the innards taken out, and then rewelded it can pass cursory inspection.

However, the cost of putting it back in is around £2k, I believe, so my solution is a good burn up once a month or so.  About 20 minutes at over 50,  making sure that the engine has got up to full operating temperature first .

Peter.

Hi Peter. Love the car and the best wheels in my opinion. My cousin said he has had an awful of people wanting it done. And in most cases wont affect the emissions he can also reprogram the ecu. H cuts it out and re welds it so providing the emissions are ok it should pass.

dad does very few miles in his and gives it a good blast on the motorway.

Martin

Hi Guys

Why it's important to keep the SatNav up-to-date!

Very best

Here is a couple of shots of my s type.

I must take some new photos as it now has yellow wheel centre caps, and I've had the reflectors tinted.

Hope you like the photos.

What kind of exhaust ? Where you got it ? I'm looking for a new exhaust. Tell me what are the options for the S-type V8 1999

  • Author

Its a custom made stainless steel exhaust. Slightly more of a burble than standard. I bought it second hand on ebay for £75 and cost just under 500 new. Fitted it now and looks nice

Hi chaps,

Very nice indeed

Thanks very much, it is a joy to drive. When I first drove her I was somewhat disappointed with how she sounded so I had some bespoke rear boxes fitted which have added a few more horses to the stable and made her burble nicely, what is quite nice is when she is under some enthusiastic acceleration the sound of the exhausts in conjunction with the whine of the supercharger does bring a smile to my face I must say.
