Hi everyone, I've just purchased a 54 x type diesel sport. Lovely car but feels hesitant, slight miss when cruising at 2000rpm. If I put foot down it takes off no problem but there is a cloud of black smoke !! When I pull up after a drive the car is fine for about 10 seconds then the idle goes lumpy as if its going to stall then picks itself back up a again rev counter goes from 900 down to about 750 then back up.... It does this every few seconds....... Any ideas ???? I'm gonna take off egr valve the weekend and Clean and then blank it off, clean Maf sensor... Anything else ?? Cheers.

I think Peter will be the best to answer this and he will tell you about Terra-Clean Sevices .????

I looked at Terra clean but at 120 quid I trying other things 1st... Bottle of cataclean in tank now, I used on an old car and was surprised it actually worked quite well. Going for service Saturday with maf cleaned and egr cleaned out then blanked off..... If no luck then Terra clean maybe the answer.....

Hi Jon,

James Price - Mobile mechanic, did a good job for me with the Terraclean service.  The engine was so smooth and performance better by about 5 mpg.

Hi Jon,

It cost me £120, but I think the 4 cylinder engine is a bit cheaper.  But that was in May last year.

But I did find a big difference, even though the engine [V6 2.7D] had only done 34k  ---  I was replaced under warranty by Jaguar at 21k miles while it was still owned by Jaguar.

Regards,

Peter.

I'm not a diesel person but I know that many 'tractor' owners swear by adding some two stroke to the tank when they fill up. I can't remember, if I ever knew them, the quantities involved but it is supposed to aid smooth running a lot. A quick Google search or on other Jag forums should shed more light.

I bought my x type(2004) a fortnight ago. As a matter of habit with any vehicle I buy I've run a bottle of injector/system cleaner through it. Have to say the difference on the Jag has been remarkable, smoother everywhere on the revs and pulls better too. Of course many people decry these additives, but in this instance it certainly appears I've done the car a favour.

I generally do not use additives, and with the modern car and using the best quality fuel they tell us you do not need them

But the fuel system can get a bit dirty, and the exhaust system a bit mucky.

The Terraclean service does a great job and you probably only should need it every 20k miles. It is really a posh additive, although a bit more intense  as it runs the engine with a replacement fuel for about 40 minutes.

I have used Wynnes EGR cleaner with some success as the Exhaust system cleaner Terracean service is just coming in at circa £200.

Our 2004 2.0 Diesel estate has identical issues - lumpy idle, sooty 'clearouts' etc. Have replaced the MAF; this improved a number of minor issues but not the idle/soot. Also,  I've seen so many reports now of blanking off the EGR valve; sorry to be ignorant, but surely this must affect something adversely. It must have a purpose? Does it affect emissions, for example? Thinking MOT here.
