Shaking on braking

Bought a 2009 XF 3.0 premium luxury in September. There was steering some wheel shake around 50 mph and indie dealer had the wheels balanced. Shake disappeared to reveal steering wheel shake happening on braking, most evident on light braking, Indie dealer had the front discs and pads replaced. Car behaviour excellent for a couple of weeks but the wheel shake on braking has gradually come back, now evident on light and heavy braking.

Has anyone any thoughts on what, if any, underlying reason there might be for this? I doubt I could ask the dealer who sold it to me to go any further. Incidentally, I'm not a manic driver but quite moderate on go and stop pedals.

hi

If you get a judder/shake through the brake pedal usually its the discs warped or have uneven wear

some times you get softer parts on the disc that wear quicker than the rest of the disc cause uneven disc, causing the judder/shake

are you sure they replaced them and not just had them skimmed, it a lot cheaper to have them skimmed

and they usually only offer a short term fix

check the discs if there new there centre's should look quite new and they should have no heavy rust

other wise if you have access to a digital vernier you could measure the disc every couple of inches and it should be the same size, if the size alters even slightly then the discs are at fault

some garages will have them skimmed for cost and ease, but they dont last

the discs do take some abuse especially on auto cars, quite heavy cars and modern big brakes, discs can wear quick, but they usually wear even.

Thanks for your reply, Joe. I agree that the discs are the prime suspect for the steering wheel shake when braking even though they've only been on the car for a few weeks. I was just wondering if there could be any other underlying faults/misalignments with the wheels or front assembly in general that could cause rapid uneven disc wear, As it is, I will have to get the vehicle looked at and my guess is that they'll say that the discs are knack'd. If so, I might not be surprised to have to replace them in a few weeks, perhaps on an endless cycle.

If I do face a disc replacement, should I go for genuine Jag parts?

  • 1 year later...

I have had warped discs on other cars and I am familiar with the affect on steering. Thought front discs were warped on my xf but turned out to be the bushes on the front lower control arms. Replaced at 186,000 miles though!
