Does anybody know, please, if there is a way of displaying engine coolant temperature on the instrument message panel for diagnostic purposes?

and i think you can on the dash as well, never tried the dash one

Does anybody know, please, what the diesel engine's coolant temperature should be?

I would say anywhere from 70 to 80 deg would be normal

usually most thermostats open at around 75 to 85 deg and fans usually start at 90 deg up

but diesels tend not to warm up very well this time of year when its cooler, thats why most diesels have a Aux heater of one form to speed the heating process up

Most of the cars i've had, have usually suffered from a failed thermostat, usually stuck open, which often show as taking ages to warm up, or warm up in traffic or stationary and then when you get going the temp drops.

some diesel are worse than others in the warming up area

have you got a problem, what are the symptoms

It's just that the temperature gauge doesn't get up to the middle position even after a ten mile drive to work Joe. I used the ETM this morning however, and it showed coolant temperature was 81 degrees just before i switched off and the temperature gauge was reading just below the middle position so I have a clearer idea of the actual temperature now

Hi Paul

you could try running your car at home and wait till the temp gets to 40 to 50 deg

and feel the two large radiator pipes, if there warm, with your engine at 40 to 50 deg, then your thermostat is passing/partially stuck open

at 40 to 50 deg the thermostat should still be shut and the radiator pipes should be quite cool

thermostat stuck partially open can cause the car to take longer to warm up

Yes, that was something I was considering trying Joe. Thanks I'm probably being paranoid of course.

Is the diesel thermostat easy / cheap to change (if required)?

HI Paul,

I drive to Lichfield every week when we have the grandchildren for a few hours,  It is between 10 and 12 miles and on a very cold day the temperature gauge does not get to its normal vertical position, but on a warm day it does just as we get there.

I will keep an eye on it this afternoon as it is now quite sunny here,

Hi Joe,

Does this apply to the earlier model S-Type or only to the later ones with the touch screen?  i.e. can I still get the diagnostics on my 2000 model on the dash display?

I'm not sure how you would get into it on the earlier models or if it possible

this refers to s-types with the touch screen
