Hi all...

I've get my hands on a S-Type 3.0L auto SE on an "X" plate (2000 year?) with genuine 64k on the clock. I was wondering if anyone knows if it's a 5 or 6 speed box? I know it's a ZF unit so contacted the manufacturer! But they couldn't tell me.

I was chatting to a guy at work this morning and he said it's NOT a "Real" jag as it has a Ford engine and gearbox on a Mondao chassis!!!

Can anyone enlighten me to what it is plz?

Hi Tim,

The guy at work must not be aware that a lot of advanced technology went into designing the  S Type chassis in Detroit - it is a Lincoln chassis.

The engine is a Ford. Car manufactures use engines to suit the cars they design, which is why the Rolls Royce used a Buick engine from 1946 until BMW bought them.

You can tell  what gearbox it is from the "J" gate manual side left. If it has a 4 3 2 1 sequence it ought to be a 5 speed Ford gear box.

Peter is not wrong, the engine is (very) largely Ford, although the Jag got VVT which I don't think the Ford's did. Also Mazda, Porche and Cosworth had a hand in it's development, and IMHO, it's one of the best engines I've come across, a real cracker.

I think your mate is confusing the X and S Types, the X was on a Mondeo chassis and uses a lot of Mondeo parts with a transverse engine, the S uses the Jag / Ford DEW platform (Lincoln, Thunderbird etc), used on the XF until last year, and an inline engine, so definitely not a Mondeo.

I can help re the gearbox, as I have a manual 

5 speed auto on all S-Types with 'manual' handbrake (up to 2002)

6 speed auto on everything with the electronic park brake (2002 onwards)

Thanks guys for all the info.  I never knew that the Rolls had a Buick engine! Or that the chassis was designed in Detroit. If Porsche had a hand in it! Then it must be a bit of a cracker. Maybe share the floor pan of the Town Car?

I've just noticed today that there is a crack in the rubber seal on that I think might be a knock/Cam sensor? Its on the near side bank just b4 the last coil pack closest the bulk head! Although, I might be wrong to what it is tbh. 🤔

It would surprise many drivers to find out that the Morgan was powered by a Ford or a Rover engine, and that the Aston Martin also had Ford based engines.

Car manufacturers put cars together from parts made by other companies.  The only company in the UK to have a Car factory that started with a coking plant, blast furnaces, a slab mill, a foundry,  sheet  and bar rolling mills, and machine shops  to make the parts,  a press shop and finally an assembly plant was the Ford plant at Dagenham, and the bulk of which closed when the Company realised that they could buy all the products they needed from companies that produced the parts in bulk.

The Ford Engine plant at Bridgend supplies engines for many other car manufacturers,  and I would like to bet that the Jaguar Engine plant in Wolverhampton will also aim to do the same.
