Hi all,    i have a 2003 2litre diesel xtype and am having problems. When car gets to 1500 revs - 2500 revs it stutters and producess black smoke through each gear. I have changed fuel filter and just the same. Could it be the EGR valve? Thanks

Hi Andrew, and welcome to the club.

Black smoke is usually fuel  related. You can get some Wynns products which ought to do the trick.

My son has a 2.0 litre x type diesel with the same issue, and the mechanic who services my car did a job on his last Friday, and I asked him about the black smoke.

He homed in on the fuel injectors which he thought would be the issue and suggested a product called Diesel Magic which cleans the injectors You can get these products from Halfords.  I put some in my car yesterday as preventative maintenance.

I don't think it could be the EGR valve - it just recycles exhaust gas, and sends it on to the exhaust.

I would also recommend the Terraclean service which clears out the fuel system, and does improve performance.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi peter thanks for your reply,    did your sons car stutter when driving? With mine when i am driving my car judders between 1500 revs and 2500 revs? I dont have a clue and am worried it's going to run up a big bill. Thanks

HI Andrew,

I am unsure as to whether it stutters a bit, but if it does I still think it is fuel related.  The black smoke is a big clue. Blue smoke and pale grey smoke are more expensive types of smoke.

I always use the high octane fuel, and indeed read a report this morning which did indicate that it improved performance.

Regards,

Peter.
