Boot open display

Hi all,

Just thought I'd let you know about a problem that I had with my car today. The wife returned from a shopping trip informing me that the boot open warning message was on the dash, even though it was clearly closed, and also the car wouldn't lock. I googled the problem and it appears to be a common fault on the XF that the separate wires running through the loom from the car to the boot lid with constant bending begin to snap. Sure enough after pulling back the corigated rubber to reveal about a dozen fine wires,one was broken and another on its way. I used a couple of crimping connectors to join the wires and it now works perfect. Jaguar are aware of the problem but will still charge around £150.00 In one respect i was quite fortunate because the downside is all the wires are black and if two are three had snapped it would of been a job trying to pair them back up.

I might be worth putting son insulation tape in different colours to strengthen and stop any chafing,

Thanks for the tip, my car just developed the same problem and I was thinking of taking it into the garage after New Year until I read your comments. I checked the wiring loom and two of the black wires were broken so I fixed them and hey presto! I must say though that it wasn't as easy as you made it sound because there is no spare cable to pull through to make the join and you need three hands in a small space and plenty of patience. I didn't have any crimping connectors so had to solder them! don't know how long it will last but keeping fingers crossed.

PS: Where do you get the crimping connectors from because might be worth getting some for future problems.

Hi Geoff,

Yes it's a bit fiddly and awkward but hey' that's Jaguar for you, they don't make anything easy. As for those connectors I just bought them from Halfords they do all sizes.

Hi

I had a similar problem only I couldn't get the boot open at all! The "zapper", the button under the steering column, the button and the key above the rear number plate wouldn't work either. There is no mechanical back up to open the boot, everything is electronic and as we all know the rear seat release mechanism is inside the boot so I was stuck. In the end I took my XF to a local (excellent) dealer who got the boot open and found 3 broken wires in the loom. I have opted to have the loom replaced  (€60 plus labour) as I do not want to arrive at some distant place and discover that my luggage is trapped in the boot. This is obviously a poor quality/design matter that rests firmly a Jaguar's door. I don't think it's a matter of chafing, my problem arose during a cold spell and I think the wires became brittle and snapped. My XF is only 5 years old with 50000 miles on the clock and is in very good condition. The wiring is obviously not up to the job and should not fail after 5 years of normal use!

Why Jaguar did not put a keyhole for the boot lid I do not know.  The S Type has one, and very useful it has been to me!

Hi Edgarpole, welcome to the forum and thanks for the information. Since my last posting I'm having more problems and now I can't open the boot without the alarm going off and the boot light doesn't work so it looks like more wires in the loom have broken. I was going to have a look at it myself and try to fix them because I didn't know that you could replace the loom so easy, so after reading your comments I rang my local garage and booked it in. That should keep me going for another 8yrs or so, providing I keep the car that long!

Hi FastPass sorry to hear you have had similar problems. I think I was unlucky in that the three wires that failed were the ones for the locking mechanisms! My thoughts are that, although the broken wires can be mended, the others in the loom are obviously going to be suspect and a complete replacement will bring peace of mind and not result in me waiting for the next problem to arise!

Hi

My theory is chafing and it seems to take roughly five years to do it's damage, I made a small slit in the boot down the seam to just let the wires breath, it's working a treat, I can keep an eye on them every time I go in the boot, at the end of the day I'am the only one that uses it and it's a simple fix if I sell the car on.

Hi Dave,

            If you remove the black plastic cap next to the LHS of the boot button you will find a lock for the boot. Remove your key from the fob and this allows you to open the boot.

Hi,

I had the similar situation where the boot was not opening, I tried opening it manually via key as well with no luck. I was not able to lock the car as I was getting boot open warning message on the dash. I took it to jaguar, I have been quoted below amount £676 and £269.

Does anyone have any feedback? Appreciate any guidance!
