2004 3L V6 X-Type Vibrations

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have a 2004 3L V6 X-Type with 130 000 KM (80000 miles) on the clock. Used to drive like a dream but recently needed a full clutch and fly wheel replacement which was done with original Jaguar parts. Not by Jaguar but by a reputable Jaguar specialist mechanic, which I'm seriously starting to question. Because the engine needed to be taken out, the mechanic and I agreed it was a good time to put cat foolers in the exhaust system and he also replaced 1 ball joint. On getting the car back from the mechanics I noticed a wobbling at certain speeds and took it immediately in to a wheel specialist to check out the balancing. To my horror they discovered that the front wheels were rather loosely attached and the wheel bolt had been stripped. I took the car back to the mechanics and they replaced the wheel nuts and apologized for the negligent work from a junior mechanic who apparently didn't put the wheels back properly. They had it balanced again. Later that day, the high pressure power steering hose burst so it had to be towed back in and fixed costing me more money. I immediately thought is some more shoddy work they didn't replace properly but they said its just bad timing. Only now after I have had a chance to properly test the car after fixing the wheels, I still feel a wobbling vibration at certain speeds and when accelerating.

Now I have read here that in many cases the drive shafts have been replaced and fixed the problem. But in my case and in light of the above information I'm thinking that by driving the car without the wheels put on properly may have buckled the wheel? I have also read somewhere it could be the ball joints? - which is something they did work on - and he only replaced 1 joint. Could this not cause the axles to be unbalanced or something? Are ball joints and CV joints the same thing? Or now could I just be having really bad luck and the drive shaft now also needs replacing? As i said earlier, before the car went in for the clutch, it was as smooth as silk. Please advise. This has already cost me a bucket load and I don't trust these mechanics anymore!

And will driving the car this way for the next few days do any major damage?

Welcome to the club, Peter.

I am not a mechanic and those with more skills than I will be able to help.

But I have had a bit of experience of wheel wobble, and also not putting wheels back on properly.  It could be simply that the tyres might have been damaged when the whees were not put on correctly.  It could be a cheap fix and worth checking.
