i've just bought a mint XKR!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys and girls, i've just put a deposit down on a mint 2004 XKR from ARUN cars. i've been looking for one for a couple of months now and found this gem on auto trader. made a bit of a step up in cars as i'm in the process of selling my Skoda Fabia VRS you may also think this is a strange car for a 21year old to want and you'd be right haha. i should be picking the car up middle of January after a few jobs have been done on it, one of which is having a quicksilver supersport exhaust fitted. i haven't got many pictures of it yet but here are a few off there site.

(heres a picture of my skoda also)

Hey Tristan,

Well done you! There was a post last year about whether Jags were old man's car, and you're helping prove the point they don't have to be!

The X100 XXR Coupe is an awesome bit of kit, I came very close to getting one last year but the right one didn't turn up. Now I'm holding out for the newer X150 which I hope to get next year.

Good luck with it and keep us posted on how you get on :wink1:

Cheers, Russ

hi guys i've picked up my jag now,  didnt get off to a smooth start really, left the garage with a big grin on my fce then got about 10 miles away and limp mode came on and engine management light. so a couple of day s later i booked it in under warranty to fix that and a few other bits one of being, i had a quick silver exhaust fitted by them as part if paying the full asking price for the car they would fit it for free.

and that they did, so i got home later that day after about 30 miles of driving and i could smell burning plastic, looked round the back and the new exhaust they fitted had burnt the bumper!  i was livid about this as i could have fitted it my self and done a better job. so when i called up about booking it for the engine light, i said that the exhaust had burnt the bumper and needed re fitting and the bumper repairing. he said ok we will re fit it and rub back and repaint that area where it had burnt. i was a bit worried about how good of a job they would do of the repair, and rightly so as they did a terrible job of it and now one side hangs lower than the other and the paint isnt even a colour match.

dont really no what to do next, any advice would be helpful.

other than that though i've been driving the car for 3 days now and the other problems are fixed and the car drives amazing and sounds incredible, all round i'm very happy with it, but the exhaust is bugging the hell of it me as the car was mark free.

I am delighted to hear that you are loving the car: That is the main thing!

I am not surprised that you are bugged by the damaged exhaust. I would be exactly the same.

If this happened to mine I would take loads of photographs of the damaged areas from every angle, making sure that the photos were sharp and showed the colour issues.

I would not take it back to the garage that messed it up: I would not trust them with it again. I would waste no time in getting three quotes from coachworks that I would trust, and get it repaired as soon as possible by the cheapest.

I would then pay the bill, and demand repayment from the selling dealer, making it clear that if they didn't pay I would pursue payment through the small claims court.

To me the most important thing would be to get it put right as soon as possible, so that I could enjoy the car again.

If the bill turned out to be less than a couple of hundred pounds or so I would do what I suggest above, but forget it if they didn't pay.

I would just want to be free of the aggravation of pursuing the matter. Though it would go against the grain to let them get away with it, there is no point in allowing the matter to prolong the grief.

What a shame the gloss has been slightly taken off of buying and owning a supercar like the XKR, by the shoddy workmanship of the sellers! Good advice from David there, I think having it checked over by another independent sounds a good course of action, in case they've messed anything else up.

Enjoy the car, you're a lucky guy

I bought my 2004 XKR convertible from Arun cars last September after looking around for a number of weeks. I'm far from happy with mine. Issues with car going into restricted performance (limp mode) and knocking front suspension. Been back to Arun under warranty but the problems remain. I've had a diagnostic carried out by a (local) independent Jag specialist who say the limp mode issue is due to a faulty ACC unit which could be very expensive and sorting out the front suspension will not be cheap either. I guess these are the risks you take buying a car from a dealership over 250 miles away with the impracticality of backwards and forwards to the dealership who say they cant find anything wrong with it. I bought the car as an investment and still love it, I've just resigned myself to having to pay to fix the issues. C'est la vie.

Phil, if I were in that situation I would get an independent automotive engineer with appropriate qualifications to do a full report on the car, and then demand that Arun repair the faults identified, making it clear that I would then be returning the car to the same engineer for confirmation that all is now in order. Your Jag specialist may or may not be appropriately qualified.

The sort of report that I am thinking about is the kind that would be produced as evidence if the matter ended up in court, and the engineer was called as your Expert Witness.

You would probably have to pay for the reports yourself, so this is only worth doing if the faults involve a four figure sum, but it does mean that Arun know that they are going to have to satisfy an expert, so have to do the work properly.

Hi Leo,

The specialists I'm referring to are well qualified and Arun recognise them as they agreed for me to have them carry out the independent diagnostic. I think I may well do as you suggest as the cost of the report doesn't concern me. The repairs could cost me in excess of £2,500 if I have to pay myself. I've been informed a replacement ACC unit will cost £2,000. I'm away next week but will contact the independent again and discuss it with them.

Many thanks,

Phil

its a shame some one else has had a problem with them. i'm more annoyed cause i paid a premium to get it from a dealer with the reassurance that it would be near on perfect. after spending a while cleaning it i've also found quite a serious patch of rust on the rear passenger side wing, which some how i missed. like you say though Phil thats the risk of buying a used car. lucky i only live 10 mils from them. but i wount be going back there ever again unless its some warranty work.i also will be telling all my friends at the bognor regis motor club to steer clear.

i also found lots of really annoying botches on the car which just makes me question all there abilitys, however they did fix the engine management light and the car runs perfectly.

its very quickly emptying my pockets haha.

got a question that i need help with. basically i'm doing a rally in the summer called Rico Rally, and its gose all down through  france to monaco and up to the nurburgring, i've read a few posts about upgrading the super charge cooling so it dosnt go into limp mode during a hot heavy drive. and tips and ideas of what to do other than the water pump? kinda want to make it full proof so i dont end up in a steaming pile of tears at the side of the road

also heres a quick update guys, so this weekend i made some custom machined BBS centre caps for my BBS Paris wheels as Arun cars just stuck some fake jag ones in the middle. i used the genuine Jaguar and BBS lettering, i'm so pleased with how they came out. i had another idea to make them just that bit more special. i want to make them weighted and attach a baring to the back of them so they stay level like rolls royce centre caps. so i'll up date you when i have had a go at that.

let me no what you think.
