What maintenance costs to consider whern buying 3.0 Diesel

Hi. I currently drive a 2.2 D X-Type and love it, but am thinking of upgrading to a 3.0 Diesel. I will be looking for one about 2010 with circa 60 000 miles. One of the things I am considering is the cost of maintenance, and am hoping somebody could advise on things like cambelt change (if there is one, my X-Type has a chain) and what mileage/cost I need to consider, servicing schedules and costs etc and anything else I have forgotten.

I was told in a post earlier in the week (which seems to have disappeared now) that I will be in for a cambelt change at 105'000 miles on my 3.0d XF with quoted cost of not less than £400 for this (I'm guessing its a bit of a bugger of a job).

Hi Mac.

If finances allow? I personally would look for one of the 1st 2011 facelift models. The pre-facelift models had very poor dipped headlamps & satnav's + check top & bottom of the chrome strip across the boot-lid for blisters in the paint.  As for maintenance & servicing costs? There be no advantage using a main dealers if the warrantee is out, Even though they have a price menu for + 3 year cars (See servicing main dealers menu for costs) Your be in for a 'spanking' bearing in mind servicing is usually done by a low paid apprentice + Issued with a health check list usually with quotes for ££s of extra work added, Which I think are given to frighten people of older models with no knowledge of cars. I think cambelts are changed at 10 years or 100,000 miles whatever comes 1st so you should be safe if that kind of mileage is genuine.

There are many horror stories about Jaguar servicing and maintenance most of which are either apocryphal or do involve a lack of preventive maintenancesuch as weekly checks on tyre wear and pressure, fluid levels, leaks, oil levels etc.

I have used a mobile mechanic for 15 years who was Rover trained, but who knows a lot about cars and has all the diagnostic equipment needed and charges about a third of the charges that a main dealer does.

I would advise that you find such a person or garage who will treat your car as his/her own and does a good job.

I use a Specialist Car sales place, just around the corner from me. They are not Jaguar specialists as such, but look after a lot of sports cars: I have seen Jaguar, Aston Martin, Maserati, Ferrari etc in their workshops, as well as the usual Mercedes, BMW and Audis.

I know the owner, and can discuss exactly what I want with the guy who will be doing the work, and discuss it with him after it has been done as well.

They never do unnecessary work, and their charges are very reasonable.

All of this, and I can walk to the place in 5 minutes, and am given a big welcome at reception by their white Labrador when I get there.

What more could a guy want? :yes:

Thanks for your help guys. I'm focussing in on hopefully a 3.0 V6 S Portfolio, and looking at around 50k - 60k miles. There are a few out there, but more with up to 90k miles. Has anybody got a similar mileage car and are they still "tight as a drum", or will things start to shake, rattle and roll by the time they get to that mileage? Once again, thanks for any info, it will help shape my final decision.

I had exactly that model, and loved everything about it: Even down to the sound system, which is the best I have heard in any car!

I changed it before reaching the mileage you are talking about but, provided that it has been properly serviced and not abused, I see no reason why it should not be good for three times those numbers.

            I have got the 3.0 D S premium luxury mine is a 2010 and has 71500 on the clock  I have owned the car coming up to three year regarding the maintenance costs brake pads and tyres general wear and tear otherwise ok touch wood. My car runs sweet as a nut still returning 40+ to gallon on a run and the power delivery still as strong as ever and I agree with a previous comment check for blisters on the paint work on the boot just under the chrome trim mine as just started. I bought my 2011 3.0 D with 108,000 on the clock but factored in the £750 service cost for the cam belt at Hatfield Jaguar before buying.  It will be another 112,000 miles before the cambelt requires changing again (or 10 years) however.

Get an independent Jaguar Specialist, with Jaguar Diagnostics, who will charge a fraction of the price of main dealers (and who are much less likely to do hard sell stuff). Have had my 2011 XF for 9 years and is the best car I have ever had, it also  has a personality which no German car would ever understand.
