Do any of you get those annoying phone calls which start off with:- "I'd like to discuss your recent accident with you."

Once or twice I asked the caller to be more specific and, of course, they have no idea. That quickly fell out of favour though and I now usually invite them to go forth and multiply.

However, this morning, I was bored and at a loose end and when I heard the usual opening gambit I replied "How do you know about that?"

The woman at the other end said "we make it our business to know about these things"

She then proceeded, "so have you claimed against the third party for personal injury and expence"

I said, "That wouldn't be appropriate as the accident happened during the course of my duties, you see, I am a detective chief superintendant with the West Midlands Police. Now then, I would very much like to know where you got your information from please. I would also like to know your name as I have a few more questions for you."

The phone line went dead.

Why did the line go dead?

Was it something I said?

I have had the Industrial Deafness question several times.

Q.. Did I work in a noisy industry?

A.  Yes, Steel Industry.

Q.  How long did you work in that industry?

A.  45 years.

Q.  from me --  Is it industrial disease A10 you are enquiring about?

A. From the caller I don't know.

Then from me  __  When you do ring me up.

Hangs up!

Totally agree with everybody reference the above.

We, however, have a simple solution.   As Ron says, any unrecognised numbers who start pontificating........we put the 'phone down on the stairs or table and let them talk to themselves for a while.  When they realise that there's nobody responding, they ring off.  Surprisingly, with just one exception, none have recalled so, presumably, we were "blacklisted (!!!!)"

Sometimes if you get a bit bored you can have a bit of fun.  The Windows Computer man wonders why I have a steam powered computer with 4 men stoking the boilers 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Ha ha there are some very good answers here.  I tend to be very forgetful at such times - I can never remember what he wanted, but I always do find the house phone where I left it an hour ago when the said nuisance caller rang.  Then I remembered!  I had said to him, "oh could you just give me a minute and I must have put the phone directly in front of my Mordaunt - Shorts?
