Hello... Looking for help....

S type 4.2 1999 has been in mothballs for some months.... put a new battery on... when I try and start it doesn't turn over just a rapid ticking noise... any ideas of where to start looking?

Thanks

Will

Could well be the starter motor or solenoid sticking, a tap with a mallet may free it off. Do check that you have 12.8v on the new battery also.

Thanks Jimbov8

I think the new battery has plenty of juice but I'll check it, then if no joy I'll get the other items checked

Would you know of a way to test them?

Cheers

Will,

S Type is renown for battery discharge. If you are certain the battery is good then it will probably be as has been suggested in previous submission. The battery can be checked with a Multimeter and you can buy very cheap, plug into lighter socket, USB unit that also has a V reader that displays the battery charge.

In the long run you would do well to invest in a CTEK battery charger/conditioner to keep your S Type up to the job on battery charge. I have mine on a CTEK MXS 7.0 at least once a month and they are very reliable and viable pieces of equipment.

Good Luck, Best Wishes and Regards, John

Measuring the voltage of the battery with a multimeter or plug in device gives no indication of the capacity of the battery, it merely shows the terminal voltage. A battery can quite easily show 12.8v on a meter and have very little capacity to do anything.

How Do I Know if My Car Battery is Bad?

The most common symptoms that come with a bad battery include:

  • Battery light illuminated on the dashboard
  • Engine cranks slowly when starting
  • Vehicle requires frequent jump starts
  • Clicking when you turn the engine
  • Lights are dim
  • Car won’t start

What is a Multimeter?

A multimeter measures the voltage in your car battery, letting you know how much power is currently stored in the battery.

Using a Multimeter to Test a Car Battery

  1. Turn the headlights on for two minutes to get rid of any surface charge the battery may have.
  2. Set the multimeter to 15-20 volts.
  3. Turn the lights off.
  4. Connect the multimeter to the positive and negative battery terminals.
  5. If you don’t have a voltage of around 12.6 volts, you may have a bad battery.
  6. Now start the car, and look for a revised voltage over 10.
  7. If your voltage drops below 5 when the car is running, it is bad and should be replaced right away.
