wax or polish

Hi All,

I've just bought a XJ super V8 and its in great nick. Which polish or wax does anyone recommend that will give a good level of protection and a deep shine without costing a packet.

swear by Maguiars products myself, there Tech Wax 2 is fantastic, dont know what your idea of costing a packet is but its about £18 but it lasts me over a year so dont consider it expensive, used to use MER and then Autoglym but the lasting shine and easy polish and lack of residue of Maguiars is tops for me, the tire gel is good too makes tyres look better than new and lasts well too.

It's all about the preperation!

Wash the car with a good mitt using Fairy Liquid in warm water (this will remove old wax/polish), next Claybar the car using a good car shampoo / water mix (15%) as a lubricant.

Wash car as normal using good car shampoo and dry.

polish car.

Weekly I then quick wash and then use a wet wax to dry and buff.

I also like to touch up the plastic bits to keep them black and keep the windows clean with glass cleaner and every couple of weeks use a trye gel / prep, if these are not done even when the car is clean the overall look is still not right.

I use Autoglym, but when you only use abvout 20ml per wash it does go a long way. I also don't over spary with the wet wax.

Personnally I'm a particular fan of Autoglym, I've been using it for more than 30 years (no not the same bottle), and with recent offers in Halfords and B&Q, my garage looks like a retail outlet for AG.

I agree with some of George's technique, the Claybar can be very useful to get a totally smooth clean on the car - far superior than just wash and tar remover, but I wouldn't personally be using Fairy Liquid due to its chemical make up.

As to polish and/or wax - you can obviously use both but wax must follow polish - it doesn't work the other way round. Gaz's recommendation of Meg is sound, I do have some (Megs #83) of this on my shelf it does give a longer shine. Have recently bought some Collinite Wax but haven't been able to use it as I've been travelling for a few weeks - the write up and recommendations are superb. I'd hope to post some phots when I get round to applying it.

I used autoglym for years and their resin polish is really good but nowadays i use Maguiars tech wax2 and ultimate wax.

Processes, waxing polishing I'm finding scary and where can you buy Maguiars tech wax2 and ultimate wax.

I used the Autoglym aqua wax on mine the other week which was really quick and easy to apply. It smells great too. You do have to re do it every 3-4 weeks though so I might try something a bit more hard core next time. I also gave their resin polish a try which seemed quite good.

Autoglym is a good, well priced range of products, which gives good results.

Onw word of warning though, detailing can and does become addictive, so you need to be careful that you don't fall foul of the addiction like some many of us have. Lol

You should really wax regular and not polish, as a lot of polished actually take some paint off or lacquer as on modern cars

I'd be interested what people use as well, I used a few but I've never really been impressed with any thing

so what do you guys recommend in waxes that it

I've been into detailing for nearly 10 years now and I've settled on Swissvax.

whilst their range of products are dearer than most, they are easy to use and give outstanding results.

my go to wax is Swissvax Shield and a 50ml pot costing £54.00 as lasted me 18 months, when I've waxed two vehicles (BMW 1 series coupe & Range  Rover Evoque) every 3 months, so it's worth it at the end of the day.

A car I had suffered from polish applications, and as Joe said, a lot of polishing does take the paint off.

I went then to wax on both Jaguars I have had, and have now settled with Bilt Hammer double speed wax which contains Carnauba Wax and hydrophobic polymers.  I tend to avoid too much shampoo and have found that luke warm water and a very good rinse gets the dirt removed and ready for the waxing.

My car sits on the drive as the garage is the home for SWMBO's Toyota Hybrid.
